This study aims to review the extent of the studies that have been carried out related to the Duolingo application in learning English. This study uses a descriptive quantitative research method with a content analysis approach. The data was obtained from the Google Scholar database in the form of journal articles about the Duolingo application in learning English which were published during the 2018-2022 period. The analysis was carried out by mapping the articles into three groups; the year of publication, type of research, and theme of study. The results of the study show that of 40 articles analyzed, the majority examine the use of the Duolingo application to facilitate learning vocabulary. Meanwhile, there are very few articles that examine the use of the Duolingo application to improve language skills. Therefore, in the future, researchers should conduct research on the Duolinggo application which is applied to improve English language skills.

Kudus has good industrial and tourism potential. One of them is the cigarette industry; and even because there are so many cigarette industries there, Kudus Regency government built Kretek Museum as a tourist media as well as the one for preserving the history of the cigarette industry that can attract tourists from all over the world. This potential has not been realized optimally, because the tourist information media at Kretek Museum still only uses Indonesian. This community service activity aims to provide assistance to the Kretek Museum in completing tourism information media using bilingual method combining Indonesian and English. This service activity is carried out through a review, revision and addition, and the preparation of tourism information media with the bilingual method. Through Assistance in the Preparation of Tourism Information Media with the Application of the Bilingual Method, tourist information media at the Kretek Museum can be accessed more effectively by tourists from all over the world.

Code mixing is one of teaching strategy. However, for some levels of students, the teacher has to take control of the use of code mixing in class in order that students can get the target language. This research aims to discover the students’ perceptions of the use of code mixing by student teacher in English class. This research involved 36 students of the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Kudus in academic year 2022/2023 through questionnaire submission and 6 students through interview. The result of this research showed that the students had positive perception in cognitive, affective, conative, and also the strengths and weaknesses aspects. The use of code mixing can give a good impact on upgrading the students’ ability in English learning and increase the students’ knowledge. On the other side, the weaknesses of code mixing used by the student teacher were making students unfamiliar with the use of English phrases which can affect their English skills. This study expects the teacher considers code-mixing as teaching strategy so the students can get their target language and have no difficulties understanding the materials.

Children online stories represent a modern evolution of traditional storytelling, where classic tales and original narratives are shared through digital platforms rather than printed books. In the context of language and education, children online stories are also valuable tools for language acquisition and discourse analysis. The way information is structured, how themes (what the story is about) and Rhemes (what is said about it) are organized. They can influence how children comprehend the text and internalize the message. This study investigates how theme and rheme structures operate in children online stories written by English native (The Fox and The Crow, Little Red Riding Hood) and Indonesian authors (The Mousedeer and The Crocodile and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih). By exploring the use of thematic progression within selected texts, the research seeks to uncover narrative patterns influenced by linguistic and cultural contexts. The core research problem addresses how English native authors and Indonesian authors differ in their arrangement of theme and rheme. The objective is to compare the structural use of topical, interpersonal, textual themes and thematic progression in selected twelve fables and twelve folktales Indonesian stories in English version and English originated stories. This study adopts a qualitative approach using purposive sampling to select four representative texts. The analysis applies Halliday and Matthiessen Systemic Functional Linguistics (2004), focusing on clause level theme identification and thematic progression across the stories. Findings reveal that English native authors tend to use a wider range of interpersonal and textual themes to develop reader engagement and consistency, while Indonesian authors prioritize topical themes to convey moral clarity and cultural norms. This divergence reflects differing narrative priorities and strategies rooted in linguistic traditions. The study concludes that theme and rheme structures in children stories are not only textual mechanisms but also carriers of cultural meaning. The implications support cross cultural literacy development and inform educators, translators, and curriculum designers in fostering inclusive and culturally responsive literature for children.

This study examines how pre-service Indonesian English teachers adapt their teaching strategies and develop their professional identities when facing cross-cultural challenges in the classroom during their teaching practicum in Thailand. A qualitative design using a narrative inquiry approach was employed to gain a comprehensive understanding of the participants’ personal narratives and reflections. Two pre-service teachers from the English Education Department of a private university in Central Java, Indonesia, participated after completing a one-month teaching internship at the Institute of Al-Abdia and Santi Witya Serong in Thailand. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and reflective journals, then analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged: challenges in teaching strategies, professional identity development, and cross-cultural teaching experiences. Regarding challenges in teaching strategies, participants faced significant language barriers and limited learning resources, which encouraged them to use code-switching and develop self-made learning materials. In terms of professional identity development, participants demonstrated growth through self-preparation, adaptation, emotional regulation, and increased self-confidence. In terms of cross-cultural teaching experience, participants must navigate diverse classroom dynamics and student diversity, which require the application of culturally responsive teaching approaches. Overall, the international teaching internship program in Thailand provides a meaningful and transformative experience that significantly contributes to participants’ long-term professional growth. These findings highlight the importance of institutional support in preparing prospective teachers to navigate cross-cultural teaching contexts.

Developing English speaking skills among elementary school students remains challenging due to limited vocabulary, low confidence, and the need for more engaging instructional approaches. Although previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the Silent Way method, most have focused on vocabulary mastery or secondary and higher education contexts, leaving limited evidence regarding its implementation in elementary EFL classrooms from a qualitative perspective. Therefore, this study explored how the Silent Way method influenced students’ engagement, participation, classroom behavior, and perceptions during speaking activities. A qualitative case study was conducted with 15 fifth-grade students at SD 1 Margorejo, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed four major themes: (1) Increased Learner Engagement and Participation, (2) Enhanced Speaking Confidence, (3) Positive Learning Experiences and the Role of Visual Supports, and (4) Persistent Challenges during Speaking Activities. The findings indicate that the Silent Way method encouraged active participation, learner independence, and greater confidence in speaking English, although some students still required additional support when using irregular past tense forms and speaking in front of peers. This study contributes qualitative evidence on the implementation of the Silent Way method in an Indonesian elementary EFL classroom, an area that has received limited attention in previous research. The findings also provide practical insights for elementary English teachers seeking to implement more student-centered speaking instruction through simple visual media and communicative classroom activities.
