Abstract

Islamic songs have gained prominence in the sphere of global education. However, they have yet received significant position in terms of the music scene, and little empirical evidence has been documented related to their use in Islamic universities or schools in Indonesia. Hence, this study aimed to fill this void and to investigate the effects of utilizing Islamic songs in teaching English at an Indonesian Islamic university. Grounded in a mixed-method case study, this study collected the data by distributing a questionnaire to 100 students and 10 lecturers from an Islamic University in Metro, Indonesia. The major findings show that the use of Islamic songs gave positive effects on the students’ comprehension, motivation and class atmosphere. The incorporation of the Islamic songs in the teaching of English could enrich the students’ knowledge of Islamic vocabulary.

Abstract

This study examines the relevance of Sibawaih’s linguistic thought in modern linguistics. The research aims to analyze Sibawaih’s contributions in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and linguistic methodology as well as their relationship with contemporary linguistic theories. This study employed a qualitative approach using library research methods. Primary data were obtained from Al-Kitab by Sibawaih, while secondary data were collected from books, scientific journals, and previous studies related to Arabic linguistics and modern linguistics. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques and analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that Sibawaih’s linguistic thought reflects systematic and scientific approaches in analyzing Arabic language structures. His phonological concepts are closely related to modern phonetics and phonology, while his syntactic theories show similarities with structural and generative linguistics. In addition, Sibawaih’s discussion of meaning and language context demonstrates relevance to semantics and pragmatics. The study concludes that Sibawaih’s linguistic thought not only contributed significantly to classical Arabic linguistics but also remains relevant to contemporary linguistic studies and Arabic language education.
