Abstract

This edition of ARTEKS: Jurnal Teknik Arsitektur presents a series of the investigation into the locality as an attempt to contribute to the development of architectural knowledge that addresses particular contexts. In architecture, as in many other disciplines, knowledge is developed and transformed through inquiry and investigation, as a means to take a position in relation to the existing knowledge. Knowledge is established through the process of dialectic that contains three parts: the thesis as the originating idea, position, or statement; the antithesis as the opposite or counter-argument to the thesis; and the synthesis as the reconciliation or transformation of those two (Fichte, 1868). Through the continuing process of dialectic, knowledge is not static and limited to what has been known before but is continuously transformed through questioning, arguing, and re-positioning. Research as a form of inquiry and investigation plays an important role in establishing the debate within the discipline (Smith, 2012) to push the boundaries of knowledge. Architecture as a form of knowledge should be developed through research (Till, 2011), which could be performed through a range of research methods (Groat & Wang, 2013; Lucas, 2016)

Abstract

This paper discusses the role of catalogue drawing as a framing device to aid design thinking in the architectural design process. Catalogue drawing has been largely understood as a representation of the finished and curated design output. However, it is argued that catalogue drawing enables designers to handle, arrange, and process information, assisting them to frame this information for different needs of design discovery. This paper analyses the catalogue drawings produced by first-year Bachelor of Architecture Programme students in Universitas Indonesia in doing their first creative making project. The study highlights four categories of catalogue drawings with various roles, from catalogue drawing intended to capture the relevant information, investigate the particularities, create a bigger picture of the design condition, and outline the design proposition. The study found that each catalogue drawings were often repeated in loops throughout the design process, enabling the students to incrementally generate original design works. This study underlines the role of catalogue drawing in revealing the progression of design thinking that is often hidden throughout the architectural design process.

Abstract

This paper proposes a design framework of Generative Folding as a way to generate continuous connection between architectural elements and events. It argues that Generative Folding has the potential to reveal the complexity of architectural context while also continuously connecting them through proliferative digital tools. The discussion is based on Deleuze’s idea of Fold (1991) and Eisenman’s logic of Object-Event (1993). The folding and alteration of architectural elements produces various connections and continuity between various kinds of time. The article presents a framework development of Generative Folds based on the identification of the relationship of object-event through folding from literature review and the analysis of continuous connection in the precedent of an architectural project by Peter Eisenman. It also discusses the general technical view of Generative Design and how it can expand the exploration of various folds. The findings of this study highlight the potential of further application of Deleuze’s Fold through generative design framework which allows new continuous connections to emerge. The framework becomes the basis for further design development to produce architectural form based on continuous connection.

Abstract

This paper describes the architectural design process based on an understanding of living materials’ properties and their growth process in response to pollution. The development of the design method was based on the existence of living materials and their potential to be the active unit of architecture. Living materials could actively grow and adapt through their reactions to external factors, in this case, pollution, allowing the material to be in a passive phase temporarily due to the forces. This paper focuses on the development of design methods based on the understanding of algae, fungi, and lichen as the living materials that will detect and detoxify air and soil pollution around Daan Mogot, West Jakarta. By conducting research through design, this paper then proposes architectural design by injecting the active-passive growth process of living materials (algae, fungi, and lichen) into the context using split and absorb mechanisms. In response to pollution, the active and passive schemes of living materials become the foundation of architectural design. This paper then proposes the term "active materiality," considering the existence and capability of the living materials as the active unit. The development of an architectural design method in this study demonstrates the possibility of design ideas to enhance dialogue between humans, other living things, and the environment and to develop programming to respond to environmental issues.

Abstract

This paper aims to identify elements of Batuan painting, a local Balinese painting, that potentially become the basis of the architecture design method. The explorations of painting become an alternative in developing design methods as explored by some architects, such as Zaha Hadid, Van Doesburg, and Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Arguably, such approaches offer different insights into programming architecture and further enrich the design process by creating particular relations with the context, instead of producing a generic and contextless architecture. In this study, the local Batuan painting that is related closely to the daily life of the Balinese community and local philosophy is explored as an attempt to relate architecture with the locality and cultural identity as part of the design process. This study employs the qualitative approach by visual observations and content analysis of Batuan paintings, identifying the elements, compositions, and important aspects that are always present in Batuan paintings. This study reveals that there are three elements from Batuan painting that are essential for the design method, namely heterogeneity, hierarchy, and the particular local painting techniques of ngucek-ngurek-ngabur. Such elements were particularly developed by the painters from Batuan Village to represent the everydayness of the local society to Tri Hita Karana, Hulu-Teben, and Tri Mandala philosophy. Furthermore, the elements imply further the spatial classifications of local activities, dualism principles, and the embedded relationship between humans, humans with nature, and humans with God. The painting elements insinuate further insights for the basis of developing the architecture, particularly in the formal and spatial arrangements as well as spatial qualities, which could be more culturally meaningful and contextually situated.
