Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine mental verbs found in  Marketing texts. Thus, the qualitative data were taken from  a graduate textbook entitled Selling Today. The data were analyzed by applying Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. The results showed that mental process of like type appear to be dominant which is realized by various lexical verbs. The mental process occur on all types of mental clauses: perceptive, cognitive, desiderative, and emotive. However, among the four types of mental clauses, cognitive clauses has the highest occurance frequency with various choices of verbs realizing its mental process. The findings offer opportunity to model English grammar for Marketing students

Abstract

This paper reports the study of Mechanical Engineering texts which is concerned with Transitivity system. The study aims to investigate the process types that frequently occur in this kind of texts and find out the process type that dominated the texts. Hence, to analyze the qualitative data obtained from an introductory textbook of Mechanical Engineering, a Systemic Functional Linguistics framework was applied. The results show that only three types of process were identified: Material, Relational, and Existential. Among these process types, the Relational process appears to be dominant. These findings may implicate teaching ESP, primarily teaching English for Mechanical Engineering students.

Abstract

Citing other authors works is essential in Research Articles (RAs). The citation is used to support claims academically. The citation is described as a way to interact with the readers and to acknowledge other scholars. Viewing from Appraisal framework developed by Martin and White [1] which is based on Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction, this activity is described as Engagement system. This study focused on exploring acknowledgement, a branch of Engagement system, found in Mechanical Engineering RAs published by Elsevier. Applying qualitative method, the data were taken from five research articles of Mechanical Engineering in 2021. Thus, the data were examined using the framework of Engagement system. What can be highlighted from the results is that the acknowledgment serving as citation may be realized by projection of mental and verbal clauses with limited choice of lexical verbs, such as report, emphasize, propose, realizing both types of process. Nevertheless, the implication of this study may help EAP practitioners in teaching citation of RAs for Mechanical Engingeering learners.

Abstract

A creative clause is a type of clause operating either on the material process of doing or material process of happening. Since both material process types may occur in creative clauses, this study aims to investigate what verbs realize each of material process in creative clauses occurring in Mechanical Engineering texts and what verbs may realize both of the material process types in Mechanical Engineering texts. Therefore, this study employed the Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) framework to analyze the qualitative data obtained from an introductory textbook of Mechanical Engineering. The results showed that verbs create, form, make, produce, and develop realize the material process of doing while verbs appear, grow, occur, and develop realize the material process of happening. It implies that only one verb may realize both material process types.
