Abstract

Conflict is a persistent social phenomenon in human life, often triggered by social change, differences in authority, interests, and culture. As a nation with high ethnic diversity, Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to ethnic conflict. This article aims to explore the genealogy of ethnic conflicts and propose alternative resolutions through a case study of the conflict between the Dayak and Madurese ethnic groups in West Kalimantan. The research employs documentation methods and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to gather data from relevant institutions, researchers, intellectuals, and conflict survivors. The findings reveal that conflicts are often sparked by personal incidents, yet their escalation is influenced by social, cultural, economic, and political factors. The limited role of the government in addressing these conflicts is identified as one of the main barriers to resolution. This article recommends multiculturalism-based resolution approaches and cross-cultural dialogue as efforts to build harmonious relationships between ethnic groups.

Abstract

This research discusses the Islamization of the tradition of Sedekah Laut (Sea Charity) in Karangagung Village, Palang District, Tuban Regency. This tradition is an expression of gratitude by fishermen for the bounty of the sea from Allah SWT and for seeking safety. The research uses a qualitative method with phenomenological approaches, and data collection through interviews, observation, documentation, literature review, and online sources. The results show that the Sedekah Laut tradition, previously known as 'Babakan', has a long history. Initial conflicts with Islamic teachings temporarily halted this tradition due to being considered polytheistic. However, since 2017, the tradition has resumed with some conditions. The name of the tradition has changed to Sedekah Laut or Tasyakuran Laut, reflecting acculturation and Islamization with terms such as 'sedekah' and 'tasyakuran'. This research is beneficial for understanding the existence and acculturation of the Sedekah Laut tradition among the fishermen community in Karangagung Village.

Abstract

Abstract

The diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious social reality of the Australian population, as a consequence of the open immigration policy in the 1960s, has prompted the Australian government to engage in social and political engineering by adopting multiculturalism as a state ideology. This policy aims to mitigate conflicting values and norms among the white population on one side and immigrants on the other. Australia seems to have successfully managed various conflicts, indicated by the low potential for political, ethnic, and religious violence, including terrorism, compared to other countries, especially its neighbors. The implications of multiculturalism are also evident in the development of the Australian Muslim community, as well as other ethnic and religious communities, which have preserved their cultural heritage and continue to thrive today, albeit still suspected of having potential conflicts.

Abstract

This text is an effort to make Ilmu Kalam (Islamic theology) an applied science. Now is the right time to revive the study of Ilmu Kalam by reorienting its methods and core topics towards more practical applications, so that this discipline once again becomes a rich, intelligent, and inspiring intellectual heritage of Islam for solving the problems of humanity. This reorientation effort is not at all intended to dismantle a scientific structure that is already so solid; rather, it is meant to enrich the great and brilliant discipline of Ilmu Kalam. However, this greatness and brilliance will be in vain if not accompanied by efforts to revitalize it in accordance with its current significance.

Abstract

For more than three decades, immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America have settled in liberal democratic countries in Europe and North America, raising questions about cultural differences and the integration of these communities into dominant cultural and political systems. Australia, as a liberal democracy and an immigrant nation, has also faced challenges in managing religious and ethnic diversity. This paper explores the relationship between religion and multiculturalism in Australia, examining government policies on social integration and cultural preservation for immigrant communities. With a particular focus on the Muslim minority—comprising over 300,000 individuals from 67 countries—this study analyzes Australia’s response to diversity through the ideologies of assimilation and multiculturalism. By learning from Australia's experience, this paper offers insights into the broader discourse on multiculturalism, identity, and religious pluralism in democratic societies.
