Abstract

This study focusses on understanding Kiai Shalih`s thinking of fashion in relation to religious authority of a scholar of Islam (ulama). What was his thought is very important in order to see how historical narratives of religious authority in the late nineteenth centuries were on shifts and changes. Through socio-history approach, this study shows that authority of ulama may become manifest in an infinite variety of ways, not only referring to the Islamic knowledge or institutions of which ulama led, but also other important elements. Here Kiai Shalih sought to place fashion as one of significant things to form religious authority. For him, fashion has not merely the cloth matters to close body, to perform a style or even to signify self-identity in society. It has also the meaning a way to be the role model in leading and criticism of Kiai Shalih for the existences of ulama under colonial control, as well as to define and differ from ulama in santri circle and in Dutch colonial. As the result of his dialogue with social reality, Kiai Shalih argued that in delivered fatwa by ulama to ordinary people the effectiveness or not was heavily determined by one of how ulama shows fashionably himself in his age of society.]

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to understand how the da’wa of Islam Nusantara by Muhammad Shalih as-Samarani is represented in academic works. Data of this paper are 18 academic manuscripts dated from 2015 to date. This paper finds that there are two strands of representations about the Islam Nusantara of Muhammad Shalih as-Samarani; the dominant narrative and the ‘other alternative’. Both narratives present as-Samarani as different actor. The first narrative present as-Samarani as a mufassir (interpreter of the Qur’an) and the second narrative present as-Samarani as a person who has deep knowledge on multiple disciplines such as fiqh, orthodox tasawwuf, and education. However, both narratives share one thing in common; they present as-Samarani as a Sufi Muslim who contributed greatly to the dialogue between Islamic teachings and elements of local wisdoms. Keywords: academic works, as- Samarani, and representation of Islam Nusantara.
