Abstract

Abstract

The existence of Psycholinguistics as a scientific discipline which has as an object of study the various psychological processes that underlie human communication, both in terms of producing language and perceiving it, has provided an alternative perspective in understanding various human communication disorders using English as the language of instruction. Communication disorders when producing language consist of phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic disorders while communication disorders when perceiving language consist of problems understanding the pronunciation of words from the interlocutor, problems understanding categories of expressions with their meaning, and problems understanding between verbal and non-verbal language. Factors that cause English communication disorders among students of the IAIN Bone Tadris English Study Program from a Psycholinguistic perspective are the mixing of students' first and second languages or foreign languages in the communication process, the students' limited ability and their confidence in communicating in English, as well as students' use of English is not yet intensive. Special strategies are needed to deal with these various communication disorders by exploiting the intersection between existing languages and growing students' ability and confidence in speaking English.

Abstract

In the context of globalization, cross-cultural competence has become essential, particularly in language learning. Listening comprehension is a vital skill for effective communication, yet many educators overlook its significance, often focusing more on grammar and vocabulary. Despite this, integrating cross-cultural elements in language instruction has been shown to enhance students' communicative abilities. However, there remains a gap in the literature concerning the effective implementation of cross-cultural instruction in listening comprehension, particularly in Islamic higher education in Indonesia. This study aims to explore the implementation of cross-culture-based instruction in teaching listening at Indonesian Islamic Higher Education institutions. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving two lecturers and 34 students from the English Education Department at State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bone. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and structured interviews. The findings reveal that lecturers utilized a combination of textbook and authentic materials, including YouTube videos and articles, to provide culturally diverse content. Digital tools such as WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and Zoom were also employed, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, to facilitate learning. The integration of these tools allowed for flexible instruction, yet the study found limitations in fostering deep cultural understanding through asynchronous communication. In conclusion, while the implementation of cross-culture-based instruction in listening comprehension demonstrated potential, the study highlights the need for a more robust pedagogical framework that fully integrates cultural content with technology. Future research should explore more dynamic methods of engaging students in real-time cultural exchanges to enhance both linguistic proficiency and cross-cultural competence.

Abstract

This study explores the internal conflicts within the personality structure of the Atsuko in Minato Kanae's novel Shojo through a literary psychological perspective. The research aims to examine how Atsuko’s psyche is shaped by her complex interactions with other characters and her environment. By utilizing Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, particularly the concepts of the id, ego, and superego, this study analyzes how Atsuko’s internal conflicts stem from her reactions to external pressures and her personal desires. The study focuses on Atsuko’s struggles with her identity, her relationships with others, and her psychological responses to the events in the narrative. By applying psychological literary criticism, the research provides insights into how the character’s mental state is intricately portrayed, offering a deeper understanding of the human psyche and its representation in contemporary literature. Ultimately, this study highlights the intersection between psychology and literature, illustrating how fictional works can reflect real psychological experiences and conflicts.

Abstract

This study investigates grammatical errors in English writing produced by male and female EFL students from different mother tongue backgrounds (Makassarese, Bugis, and Javanese). Using a qualitative descriptive case study design, six participants, three males and three females, were asked to compose 150-200 words essay on the topic “The Benefits of Using Cell Phones” to examine how gender and mother tongue influence grammatical accuracy. The errors were identified and categorized using Dulay et al.’s (1982) surface strategy taxonomy, consisting of omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The analysis revealed that the Bugis male student demonstrated the highest frequency of omission errors, while the Makassarese male student produced the fewest. Both male and female students showed similar patterns in addition errors, with the Bugis and Makassarese female students recording the highest counts. Misformation errors were most frequently found in the Bugis male student and the Makassarese female student, whereas misordering errors were also common among the same two participants. Overall, the findings indicate that mother tongue plays a substantial role in shaping the types and frequencies of grammatical errors committed by male and female EFL learners. These results highlight the importance of recognizing linguistic background in instructional planning, enabling educators to design targeted teaching strategies to improve grammatical accuracy. Moreover, the findings can assist curriculum developers in constructing more inclusive and effective programs that address the specific learning needs of students from diverse mother tongue backgrounds.
