Abstract

Islamic educational institution in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, has long history of its development. It begins when Islam itself had been initially introduced to the region. By the mid of 20th century, people witnessed the formative period of Islamic higher educational institutions. This article seeks to describe how Islam has been scholarly taught—and of course learned—in higher educational level, specifically in MA and Ph.D. degrees. The writers limit its area of study only to look at Islamic studies as has been developed in Graduate School (SPs) Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta within the las five years. Keywords: Kajian Islam, integrasi keilmuan, pendidikan tinggi, pascasarjana

Abstract

This article examines how lecturers of Qur’anic Studies at five Indonesian Islamic universities engage with Western scholarship on the Qur’an. Drawing on fieldwork conducted at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, UIN Alauddin Makassar, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, and UIN Bukittinggi, the study investigates how faculty members negotiate the incorporation of Western approaches in their academic programs. The article also engages with recent academic literature to reinforce its contemporary relevance. Our findings suggest that although there is a general openness to Western methodologies, significant tensions persist, particularly regarding the design of curricula. Influential figures within these departments have shaped what they view as an appropriate orientation for students, revealing competing visions between two educational aims: (1) engaging with Western academic approaches to the Qur’an and tafsīr, and (2) mastering Qur’anic knowledge for Islamic missionary purposes.[Artikel ini mengkaji pandangan para dosen Ilmu al-Qur’an di Program Studi Ilmu al-Qur’an dan Tafsir dari lima Universitas Islam Negeri terhadap keilmuan Barat tentang al-Qur’an: UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, UIN Alauddin Makassar, UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, dan UIN Bukittinggi.

Abstract

This article examines the marginalization of the traditional pesantren educational system and how the system finds a way to be recognized as equal in contemporary Indonesia. This study is mainly based on the author’s observation of practices in Tafsīr al-Jalālayn pedagogies in traditional and modern West Javanese pesantrens and the kitāb reading tournament, with in-depth interviews of some related figures and teachers, during the periods 2015-2017. This article argues that the marginalization of the educational system since the coming of modernization in the early twentieth century continues to happen up to the end of the century. The graduates of the traditional institutions keep left behind, and that the traditional pesantren system is merely recognized as a type of non-formal education. The twenty-first century period witnessed attempts from the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Religious Affairs to equalize the kitāb-based learning in the traditional milieu. By so doing, the graduates are expected to receive equal rights for pursuing their education or looking for a career.

Abstract

This article examines the current traditional Islamic education in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, following the passing of the pesantren bill into legislation by the Indonesian People’s Representative Council in September 2019. We focus on aspects of the Pesantren Legislation (Undang-Undang Pesantren), which recognises pesantren as a new type of formal education and regulates the way the pesantren system is managed. People who engage in the pesantren system will certainly take advantage of this legislation. Nevertheless, they cannot avoid possible changes of established values in pesantren that have been socially reproduced for a long time. The authors argue that in the first two decades of the 21st century, Indonesian traditionalist Muslims have celebrated an important development in the pesantren tradition-based education, which received formal recognition in Indonesia’s national education system.
