Abstract

There are two communication approaches had been mentioned in this study, firstly: the cultural communication strategy, and the second: communication habit. Cultural communication seeks to describe the interests that was built by seeing the opportunities and the benefits of the trade that was occurred between the merchant community around on the two holy lands of Medina and Mecca to the visitors and pilgrims or commonly referred to as umrah pilgrims. There are two trading strategies with the use of the Indonesian language. The firstly because of the largest number of Umrah pilgrims each year to the Nabawi Mosque in Medina and illegitimate mosques in Makkah (alharam). Secondly, the habitual communication, namely mapping cultural ties was not only done by the marriage or kinship relations assimilation), but this is the cultural linkage can occur because each individual has the same interests or needs each other. The method used was descriptive qualitative, by observing, the real communication patterns was happened between Indonesian Umrah pilgrims and traders from Arab and Middle Eastern communities around the Nabawai mosque of Medina and the Haram Makkah. The specific communication pattern is trading communication with the approaching to the cultural elements and Indonesian nationalism in it, so that the impression is more interesting. It’s looked the merchants around the two holy lands were good at attracting the interest and enthusiasm to the shopping for the visitors and pilgrims from Indonesia, by greeting and offering prices using Indonesian language. While the Indonesian pilgrims are well known having the strong nationalism and cultural culture, so the flavors arose, such as feel in the village themselves and having kinship if they heard the mother's language and culture used by others.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness of peer and self-assessment in enhancing students’ speaking skills at the second-grade students of SMA 3 Parepare. The subject of this research was the XI IPA 1 class which is consisted of 28 students. The sample was taken by using cluster sampling. The design of this research was pre-experimental with pre-test and post-test design. The researcher gave pre-test and post-test to know whether implementing peer and self-assessment methods can improve students’ speaking skills or not. The result of this research indicates that there was an improvement in the students’ speaking skills. It was shown in the students’ mean score of post-test (62.8) that was greater than the pre-test (19.5). Even, for the level significant (p) 5% and df = 27, and the value of the table is 1.703, while the value of the t-test is 1.825. It means that the t-test value is greater than the t-table (1.825 ≥ 1.703). Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ speaking skill is significant because previously the students’ speaking skill was low and after implementation peer and self-assessment methods there have been differences or development of speaking after getting the treatment. So, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

The research aims is to how the students’ personality and do extrovert students get better speaking scores than introvert students in speaking ability. There are many students have basic in speaking because majority of the student study English in the course but some of student still lack speaking. One of the factors is from their personalities, such as self-confidence, nervous, and has personality extrovert and introvert. This study applies quantitative which employed descriptive quantitative research design. The data is started classifying students’ personality by using questionnaire and then the students’ speaking score by using test. The finding reveals that extrovert students get better speaking score than introvert students in speaking ability. In addition, the result of students’ speaking test showed that from the basic of determine the result by Mann Whitney This showed the Asymp.Sig> 0,05 so hypothesis accepted it can answer this second research question, which is to know do the extrovert students get better speaking score than introvert students in speaking ability.
