Abstract

The previous studies on Malay wedding traditions have largely focused on describing lexical meanings or general cultural elements, while the representation of cultural values ??embedded in the integrity of ritual icons and proverbs has not been comprehensively examined. This study aimed to describe the representation of cultural meanings and values ??in the Tunjuk Ajar Tegur Sapo tradition during traditional Malay wedding ceremonies in Muaro Jambi regency, Jambi Province. Using a qualitative descriptive method through an ethnolinguistic approach, this study examined the relationship between language, culture, and value systems. Data are sourced from recordings of traditional speech, verbal symbols, and customary advice with informants, traditional leaders and practitioners directly involved. Data collection was carried out through a free-engagement conversation technique to record authentic interactions. The results reveal that the Tunjuk Ajar Tegur Sapo tradition is a concrete manifestation of the values ??of responsibility, harmony, and social ethics symbolically represented through expressions of affection and collective social support. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of analysis between physical icons and proverbs as an integrated system that legitimizes community moral standards. Theoretically, this research contributes to strengthening ethnolinguistic studies by proving that ritual speech is not just a means of communication, but a vital instrument in maintaining the stability of cultural values ??and mediating the transition of social life in the Muaro Jambi Malay community.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the phenomenon of multilingual naming in food and beverage businesses in Jambi City, including identifying word types and the reasons behind their name choices. The research method used  a qualitative descriptive approach focused on the presentation and in-depth interpretation of linguistic data. Data collection techniques were conducted through direct field observations to document business signage and in-depth interviews with business owners to explore naming motivations. Data analysis techniques were applied by classifying language use based on the type of meaning and function of the linguistic landscape, which were then interpreted to identify sociolinguistic trends in society. The results show that a number of culinary businesses in Jambi City extensively use multilingual naming, both entirely and in a hybrid manner. Some examples of naming found include Brownmix, Kafaaf, D'Box, D'BestO, Casa de Alicia, Haus Tea, and Love. These findings indicate that multilingual use has two main functions: informative and symbolic. The informative function is reflected in the use of foreign languages to concisely describe product types or business images. Meanwhile, the symbolic function is seen in the efforts of business owners to build a modern, prestigious, and globally oriented identity to increase business competitiveness in the public space of Jambi.

The method used was participatory learning with a learning by doing approach, covering the stages of preparation, implementation, evaluation, and follow-up. Children were introduced to basic English vocabulary related to fruit names, colours, flavours, and simple instructions through the direct practice of making fruit salad. The pre-test and post-test evaluations showed an increase in English literacy skills with an average N-gain score of 0.6 (moderate category). Although the improvement was at a moderate level, this activity was able to foster enthusiasm in children, improve fine motor skills, build self-confidence, and maintain healthy living habits. This program also involved teachers and parents so that it could be continued at school and at home. Thus, this activity is relevant to support foreign language proficiency from an early age, in line with a curriculum that emphasizes active, creative, and fun learning, as well as being a model of contextual learning that can be replicated at various levels of education.
