Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to describe the twelve types of figures of speech namely lexical metaphor, namely: metaphor, simile, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, overstatement, apostrophe, understatement, verbal irony and the one that dominant and also explain what does the dominant mean in Vogue’s advertisements. This research was conducted by using the qualitative and quantitative design. It took fifteen advertisements taken randomly from Vogue’s magazine which were published from October 2011 until January 2012. The result showed that there are only five figures of speech were used in the advertisements of Vogue’s magazine, they are : hyperbole, personification, simile, metaphor and allegory.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research concerned on Improving Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount Text by Using Transitions – Actions – Details (TAD) Strategy. In this research, the writer conducted classroom action research. The subject of this research were the second year students of SMP Swasta Immanuel, Medan, class VIII-A which consisted of 36 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was organized in four steps, namely Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. Cycle II was the improvement of Cycle I. There are two kinds of data collected during the research, qualitative and quantitative data. The instruments for the quantitative data was writing test while the qualitative data was gathered through Observation Sheet, Interview Sheet and Diary Notes. Findings showed that students’ score improved from Test I to Test III. Based on the data analysis, Students’ mean in Test I was 44.33, in Test II was 61.13, and Test III was 82.66. The conclusion is that the Transitions – Actions – Details (TAD) Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text. Keywords: TAD Strategy, Writing, Recount

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research concerned on Improving Students’ Achievement in Writing Procedure Text through Picture Word Inductive Model. In this research, the writer conducted classroom action research. Subject of this research were the second year students of SMA N 1 Pematangsiantar Class X-1 consisted of 30 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was organized in four steps, namely Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. Cycle II was the improvement of Cycle I. There are two kinds of data collected during the research, qualitative and quantitative data. The instruments for the quantitative data were writing test while the qualitative data was gathered through Observation Sheet, Interview Sheet and Diary Notes. Findings showed that the students’ score improve from orientation Test to Test. Based on the data analysis, Students’ mean in Test 1 was 52.40, in test II was 67.13 and Test III was 81.16.
