Abstract

This research discusses about the representation of social actor in news media. The social actor that becomes the focus of this research is the U.S. President Donald Trump. The news media chosen by the researcher are Reuters and New York Times (NYTimes). The issue that become the focus in this research is #blacklivesmatter. Which that issue become trending in social media, because that issue, there are many Americans who do demonstrations in some cities, which asked Mr. Trump to do something related with that national issue. In this research, the researcher uses social actor theory from Van Leeuwen (2008). This research applies descriptive qualitative method.

Abstract

Humor has been studied from different disciplinary viewpoints including philosophy, psychology, sociology, literature, rhetoric, linguistic and others by many scholars and experts. Thus, with the development of humor study, the linguistic perspective is becoming the mainstream of thoughts because it is more applicable and more systematic. In that case, to understand the pattern of communication in humor, the study of pragmatic is needed. Therefore, this research is aimed to analyze humor that are produced in The Big Bang Theory (a famous sitcom in America) from the perspective of cognition and communication. The analysis is done by applying descriptive method and using Sperber and Wilson’s theory of relevance theory. As the result of the analysis, it shows that there is a lot of humors that are based on relevance communication so that the application of relevance theory must be applied in order to understand the context of the humor. Further, the writer also noticed that the form of verbal humor used in The Big Bang Theory mostly showing about common problems and drama situation such friendship, job and daily life. In addition, regarding to the relevance theory of communication, the writer also noticed that the mechanism of humor in The Big Bang Theory is using the moment of optimal relevance of cognitive principle which means that when the audience has a common presumption of a context of conversation, the speaker or the characters in the sitcom is producing or uttering something unexpected in order to make the audience laugh or joy in humor.Keywords: context of humor, humor, pragmatic, relevance theory

Abstract

Public Speaking is one of the most important skills one should have. In the industrial 4.0 era, the ability to speak and elaborate on certain issues and topics in front of the public is highly significant due to the fact that now information can no longer be limited. Information is available on the internet, especially on social media. Therefore, in order to avoid misunderstanding the content of the information, public speaking ability is needed. The ability helps people to grasp information correctly. Moreover, the public speaking ability also teaches how to convince people which will be useful for those who are working and also for job seekers. This article discusses the public speaking skills of SMA Way Jepara students, especially in grades 11 and 12. The students are encouraged to practice their speaking ability. They are given some materials and topics that would help them to be more confident. After the 2nd meeting was conducted most of the students were able to gain a much better speaking ability and they also became more confident.

Abstract

The researcher conducted research to find out how the process of exclusion and inclusion in very important topic that is happening at this time regarding the speech made by President Joe Biden as the President of the United States to criticize the actions of the Russian state which attacked the State of Ukraine.This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Discourse Analysis approach through the theory proposed by Theo van Leeuwen to describe how the social actors are described in the speech delivered by President Joe Biden. In President Joe Biden's speech, 13 data were found that were used to marginalize the social actors, namely the Russian government which carried out attacks on Ukrainian state.In this study, no exclusion strategy was found, but four inclusion strategies were found, namely Differentiation – Indifferentiation, Assimilation – Individualization, Objectivation – Abstraction and Association – Disassociation. The most dominant inclusion strategy found was Differentiation – Indifferentiation with the percentage of 50%. Meanwhile for Objectivation – Abstraction and Assimilation – Individualization are 12,5%, while the percentage of Association – Disassociation is 25% were found.  Key words: Critical Discourse Analysis, Exclusion, Inclusion Strategies and Joe Biden’s Political Speech.
