Abstract

This study deals with Tennessee Williams’ work, The Glass Menagerie based onpsychological analysis. The characters in the play are intentionally made to identify the attitudesand behaviors of each character in order to give up clear descripion of the characters. In the GlassMenagerie there are three characters who try to escape from reality but they have differentpsychological problem in life. Living in illusion is Amanda’s way to escape, playing the glassfigure is the way of Laura to escape from reality, while the way of Tom to escape is going to themovies. The purpose of analyzing the literary work is to display clearly about the psychologicalelement in the play and also moral lesson clearly.

Abstract

This research deals with the types of Illocutionary Acts in Conversation As Found in Tuo Nifaro Movie by Brams Zega. The objectives of this study are to find out kinds of illocutionary act performed by Gala as the main character in Tuo Nifaro movie. The Descriptive qualitative was used in the analysis of theIllocutionary Acts. The data of this thesis is derived from identify and classify the types of Illocutionary acts in Tuo Nifaro movie’s transcription that performed by Gala. The data showed that there were 59 Illocutionary Acts that appeared in Gala’s utterances. The data analysis indicated that Gala as the main character in Tuo Nifaro movie applied five Illocutionary Acts based on Searle: Assertives, Directives, Commissives, Expressives, and Declaratives. The dominant type of Illocutionary Acts is Directives, because the amount reaches is 34 i.e 57.62%. Meanwhile Assertives is 8 i.e 13.55%, Commissives is 3 i.e 5.10%, Expressives is 9 with 15.25%and Declaratives is 5 i.e 8,47%. The writer would like to give suggestions to the movie’s script writer who should be add knowledge about Illocutionary acts in the making of movie script to get a language that captivates the audience and to the other researchers who interested in conducting the research about pragmatics especially in illocutionary acts, this research can be used as the references in conducting the research about illocutionary acts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how are the exclusion and inclusion processes of Reynhard Sinaga case in Tribunnews.com.This study used a qualitative descriptive method with the approach of critical discourse analysis from Theo van Leeuwen to describe how the social actors are portrayed in the news. The source of data of this study was taken from 10 Reynhard Sinaga’s news in a Tribunnews.com. dated the February 1th to February 30th, 2020. There are ninety data in Reynhard Sinaga's news containing Exclusion and Inclusion processes. The finding of this research were found three strategies of Exclusion process in the Reynhard Sinaga’s news namely Passivation, Nominalization and Substitution of clause and seven strategies of Inclusion process, namely Differentiation - Indifferentiation, Objectivation - Abstraction, Nomination - Categorization, Nomination - Identification, Determination - Indetermination, Assimilation Individualization, Association - Dissociation. The most dominant strategy of Exclusion process found is Passivation with 9%, and for the most dominant strategies of Inclusion process found are objectivation – abstraction and determination - indetermination with 23%. The writer would like to offer the suggestion to students of English department to enrich their knowledge in understanding the process of exclusion and inclusion when writing, to lecturer, for teaching materials for students in order to better understand the use of the Exclusion & Inclusion process strategy and its effects and journalists, and news writers to be able to write news accurately and with certainty without eliminating one of the social actors and presenting social actors as they are so as not to have a negative effect on readers and society.
