Abstract

The thermohydraulic aspect utilization on a nuclear reactor is very dominant, because the system gives limitation on the reactor operation. Regarding the problem, theoretical analysis of thermohydraulic aspect is done for a research reactor of 2 MW with hexagonal configuration of fuel elements With an assumption that the power generation each fuel element is the same and the other facilities are neglected, the output of FLUENT V4.25 program gave information that theoretically this research reactor can be operated on thermal power of 2 MW.

Abstract

In this experiment, the study focusses on reactor core thermohydraulic aspects especially the distributions of fuel surface temperature, fluid temperature and fluid axial velocity. Simulation data were obtained in the middle, at the edge and at the comer sub-channels. In this experiment, modeling of hexagonal configuration of reactor core and reflector was carried out. The power generations were assumed constant at 250 kwatt, 375 kwatt and 5 00'kwatt for each filel element. This model was prepared and analyzed using Fluent Version 4.25 package program available at the Thermodynamic Laboratory of IURC-ES. The result shows that this reactor core model gives low fuel surface and fluid temperatures.

Abstract

The retrofit and conversion of a R22 chiller to R290 was done on an AC chiller Carrier Type 30-GB-070-910. The retrofit of chiller was mainly the implementation of safety features and conversion to HC refrigerant. A series of measurements to evaluate its performance has been carried out on the same chiller for both eases i.e. before and after conversion, while it was in use. The resulting data analysis revealed that the chiller performed better with HC refrigerant compare to its previous condition. Retrofitting procedure, refrigerant conversion, test procedure and data analyses are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Sub-channel analysis is a method for analyzing thermal hydraulic aspects of nuclear reactors or heat exchangers. The analysis calculates distributions of fluid temperature, pressure, axial velocity, transverse velocity, and fuel rod temperature or heat flux. This paper deals with efforts for improving the accuracy of the sub-channel method. Three numerical schemes for evaluating transversal advective heat rates, i.e.: up wind, exponential, and central difference schemes, were compared. The differences among calculation results obtained by programs that apply these schemes were insignificant. The paper also seeks the best definition of averaged temperature for evaluating physical properties of control volume. It was found that accuracy of the sub-channel method can be improved if the volume-averaged and area-averaged enthalpy in the energy equation, and the volume-averaged density in the axial momentum equation were evaluated based on the fluid temperatures at the middle of control volumes.

Abstract

Horizontal Axis Wind Energy Conversion System (HAWECS) is more efficient than other Wind Energy Conversion Systems at the same condition [2,3]. Rotating cylindrical blade is taken as the substitute alternative to the airfoil blade considering that presence of lift force and its simple manufacturing production. The lift force generated by the rotating cylinder is known as the Magnus Effect [1,7,9]. The savonius rotor in this research is employed to propel the cylinder. This research conducted an experiment to optimize the energy conversion of a HAWECS which its blades consist of the combination of cylinder and savonius rotor. Two kind of blades were used in this experiment, i.e.blade with L/D (ratio of the length and diameter of cylinder) equals to 3 and 4. Three variations of wind velocities were used, i.e. 8.5 m/s, 9.7 m/s, and 10.2 m/s. Experimental results present that the blade with L/D ratio = 4 give more efficient than the L/D = 3, and the increase of power was reached if the wind velocity increases.

Abstract

Flow field at the inlet of a combustor under the influence of swirler vanes was investigated computationally. The isothermal flow was examined to predict the combustion stability. The simulations indicate different flow-field characteristics can be achieved under the same swirl number. In addition to swirl number, swirl velocity induces the existence of centrifugal force. This force affect velocity profile peak, static pressure profile, radially; and recirculation zone, axially.

Abstract

In this research, a simulation method has been developed for designing a solar air conditioner and predicting its perfomances. This simulation based on solar irradiation data, solar collector performance data, LiBr-H2O absorption chiller single effect performance data, Phase Change Material (PCM) data as its inputs. Napthalene is used for HTTS and acetic acid is used for TTS. Energy balance, mass balance, and characteristic equations of each component are used in the solar air conditioning simulation. Validation of the developed simulation model was done with experiment data for solar air conditioning system with HTTS and LTTS without auxiliary heater. Generally, the tendency of the simulation and experiment results are similar. The application of HTTS and LTTS make the system can be operated more in 100 minutes.

Abstract

The limited application of ozone depleting substance (ODS) such as CFC and HCFC refrigerants has encourage researchers to find a new alternative refrigerant. Hydrocarbon refrigerant such as R-290 (propane) has been widely used because it is environmentally friendly, save energy, and drop-in substitute. However, hydrocarbon refrigerants are flammable and categorized as A3 class refrigerant, so that the application of the refrigerants are limited by safety standard. In this research, an effort to lower the flammability of R-290 has been carried out. Series of flammability test have been done to proof that the flammability of R-290 is reduced by mixing it with R-22. Mixture of R-290/R-22 at molar fraction 0.4/0.6, 0.5/0.5, 0.59/0.41 has Lower Flammability Limit (LFL) above 3.5%, so that it can be classified as A2 class refrigerant. The optimum refrigerant charges of the refrigerant mixtures that give the highest COP have also been investigated. The results show that the optimum refrigerant charge of the mixture is lower than R-22 but higher than pure R-290. The system COP of R-290/R-22 mixture is higher than that of R-22 but lower than R- 290 system.
