Abstract

Technology development advances in recent years produce materials having higher strength, complicated shape and high accuracy. These have placed demands on the new technology in machining processes. Non-conventional machining processes are providing effective solutions to the problem mentioned above.Wire EDM machining is one of some non-conventional machining processes which is using wire as tool. The limitation of this technique as also happened with other non-conventional machining processes is a lower rate of material removal comparing to the conventional processes. This study was conducted to obtain data in order to optimize machining condition of medium carbon steel using for die material.

Abstract

Electro Discharge Machining Wire Cut (EDM Wire Cut) is one of non-conventional machining process which is used by many manufacturer industries. Technology development demands this process can produce high quality product with good productivity. To fulfill this demand, optimization of machining processes that involves several variables can be done. When doing the optimization of machining condition, an algorithm using mathematical model is needed to calculate the optimum values of process variables. There are many optimization techniques and methods which can be chosen, one of them is Genetic Algorithm. In this research work, an implementation of Genetic Algorithm in machining process optimization is presented. As the optimization parameters, feed rate and surface roughness selected. Based on the above parameters and considering the capability of the existing EDM Wire Cut, five input parameters are determined with right combination, namely no load voltage, capacitor, on time, off time and servo voltage. The output has been compared to other optimization method and it appears that the Genetic Algorithm shows promising results and thus may be proposed as an alternative tool in machining process optimization.

Abstract

This study is aimed to produce CAM software run under AutoCAD 2000 or latest version using Visual Basic for Application (VBA) program. Machining processes are carried out using endmill cutter at X-Y plane. Input of this software is 3-D drawings of the model. The output of this software are G-Code of cutting tool path. The software also provides fasilities to approach spline and ellips with connected lines but still considering geometric tolerances of line profile.

Abstract

The Taguchi method uses signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) analysis to obtain optimal values and requires repeated data collection combined with control factors. However, in practice, the Taguchi method is still not in accordance with this concept, even though there are standard analysis options that do not require repeated data collection. In this study, a validation study of the Taguchi method was conducted for the case of a single data collection by comparing the optimization results obtained against standard analysis and validation experiment results. Determination of validity is carried out based on four comparison parameters, namely the combination of control factors, prediction of optimum value, deviation of optimum value prediction, and ranking of control factor influence. This research was conducted using a turning process case study. From this research, it is concluded that the Taguchi method for optimization of a single data collection is valid.

Abstract

Sheeting machines play a crucial role in the packaging industry, making parameter optimization essential for enhancing efficiency. This study applies the Taguchi method to optimize key operational factors: roller speed, brake frequency, and pressure. Using ANOM and ANOVA, roller speed was identified as the most influential factor, contributing 82.76% in ANOM and 87.29% in ANOVA, followed by brake frequency (7.08% in ANOM, 7.36% in ANOVA). The F-test (95% confidence interval) confirmed that pressure had an insignificant effect, leading to its exclusion via a pooling-up strategy. Error contributions remained below 15%, ensuring that no critical factors were overlooked. Among interactions, only the roller speed–pressure (A × B) interaction significantly impacted production speed. The optimized parameters increased throughput from 33 to 42 sheets/min (27.3% improvement) and enhanced production robustness (S/N ratio) from 30 to 32.49 (8.3% increase). These findings confirm the effectiveness of the Taguchi method in refining sheeting machine performance.
