Abstract

Nine species of Freycinetia are enumerated for Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia: F. angustifolia Blume, F. berbakensis Widjaja, Pasaribu & Hidayat, F. imbricata Blume, F. javanica Blume, F. kamiana B.C. Stone, F. rigidifolia Hemsl., F. sumatrana Hemsl., F. winkleriana Martelli and F. scabrosa Pasaribu & Widjaja,. The latest species is newly described. A key to the nine species in Jambi is provided.

Abstract

GRADSTEIN, R. et al. 2010. Bryophytes of Mount Patuha, West Java, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 13(2): 107-123. - This paper presents the results of a two-day survey of the bryophyte flora of Mt. Patuha and its surroundings near Bandung, West Java, carried out in the framework of the 5th regional training course on bryophyte and lichen diversity and conservation organized by SEAMEO BIOTROP, Bogor, in July 2009. A total of 159 bryophyte species were identified, including 98 mosses, 60 liverworts, and 1 hornwort, representing almost 1/6 of the total bryophyte flora of Java. Three moss species, Bryohumbertia subcomosa (Dix.) J.-P. Frahm, Fissidens gymnogynus Besch. and F. polypodioides Hedw., and one liverwort, Lejeunea pectinella Mizut., are new additions to the Javanese flora. The bryophyte diversity of Mt. Patuha is well representative of the Malesian flora and is rich in uncommon species. However, the relatively poor representation of shade epiphytes and commonness of sun epiphytes and generalists reflect disturbance of the forest by anthropogenic activities. Careful attention should be given to conservation of the remaining natural forest in order to prevent further losses of the rich bryophyte diversity of the area.

Abstract

The jamblang distribution has been studied in the southern part of  Aceh Besara, which is in the South of Jhanto district, Northern Krueng Raya, Southern Masjid Raya and Ujung Pancu district. The aims ofthis study was to determine the distribution area of jamblang based on rainfall, soil type, and lands cover . The data were collectedby observation. Distribution data are presented in the  form of map using ArcView 3.3 Software. The results of the analysis showed that the common jamblang was distributedin the rainfall region of 1500-2500 mm/year in dryland farming and the chromic luvisols, humic acricols, dystric fluvisols, dan rendzinas.

Abstract

The Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica L.) distribution has been studied in the southern part of North Sumatera, which is in the South Labuhanbatu district, North Padanglawas, Padanglawas, SouthTapanuli, Padangsidempuan city and Mandailing Natal district. The aims ofthis study was to determine the distribution area of balakka based on rainfall, lands cover and soil type. The data were collectedby observation. Distribution data are presented in the  form of map using ArcView 3.3 Software. The results of the analysis showed that the common balakka was distributed in the rainfall region of 2000 – 2500 mm/year in dryland farming and the humic acrisols soil.

Abstract

Taxonomic study on Pandanus (Pandanaceae) in swamp area, Singkil had been conducted from November 2012 until June 2013. Based on morphological characters,  5 species of Pandanus have been identified in the area  as  Pandanus atrocarpus, Pandanus labyrinthicus, Pandanus militaris, Pandanus odoratissimus and Pandanus tectorius. The morphology and life cycle of species were categorized into two types, and they are medium arborescent pandan  (Pandanus labyrinthicus and Pandanus militaris) and large arborescent pandan (Pandanus atrocarpus, Pandanus odoratissimus and Pandanus tectorius).  Anatomical characters of Pandanus such as stomata (type, size, papilla) and epidermal cells supported the morphological features.

Abstract

Community service activities titled Transforming Organic Waste into Organic Fertilizer in Namo Bintang Village in May - November 2019. This activity aims to convert organic waste into organic fertilizer that has economic value, and does not endanger the environment. The method used is counseling, lectures and training as well as monitoring and evaluation with the community directly to the field. Utilization of Google Class Room is done in several places in the Biology department with the approval of the Chair of the Department. The activity was carried out by means of counseling and lectures, explaining the theory and techniques of using Google Class Room, which was followed by a group of Lecturers and Students in the Biology department at USU FMIPA.The training was conducted by a group of Lecturers and Students in the Biology department of USU FMIPA separately. All carry out this activity by proactively conducting training to get results in the form of the Google Class Room application. The equipment for using Google Class Room is only a laptop, smartphone and internet package. And finally the monitoring and evaluation of the success of monitoring work in the field will be carried out by going directly to the field together, monitoring by visiting to find out whether lecturers and students have been able to do it themselves. In addition, the relationship will be carried out by telephone to overcome the problems that arise . In general, community service activities have been successfully carried out and seen a good cooperative relationship between the Higher Education, especially the Implementation Team, the village community realizes the importance of saving the environment from at the same time improving life expectancy because it can make its own fertilizer / compost.

Abstract

The West Batang Toru Forest Block in the North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, is one of the lowland forests in Sumatra with a variety of plant communities and populations that have not been fully documented. This area is considered a potential high-value carbon reserve of ecological significance. The purpose of the study was to determine the structure and composition of the Dipterocarpaceae at the West Batang Toru Forest Block. This research was conducted from September 2021 to March 2022. The research location was determined by using the purposive sampling method with a transect length of 300 m. Each lane had plots of 20 × 20 m measured in a zigzag position and had an interval of 10 meters. The number of plots in each lane was 10, for a total of 90 plots. Based on the observations, there were nine species of Dipterocarpaceae obtained from a total of 621 individuals. The basal area ranged from 578.02 cm2/Ha to 397,894.43 cm2/Ha, and the largest basal area was at the tree level. The vegetation composition ranged from 60% to 66%, and the highest composition was at tree level. Sixty-two trees were classified as having the largest basal area, followed by poles (42 individuals) and saplings (64 individuals). Shorea platyclados occurred consistently with a compositional percentage value at the tree level with a value of 66%, the pole level of 53%, the sapling rate of 34%, and the seedling level of 9%. The carbon stocks from Dipterocarpaceae stands were 91534 tons/ha, which is the first estimate of their ecological importance

Abstract

West Batang Toru Forest Block, North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province is a forest that contains numerous species of tree stands and is estimated to be able to store a considerable high carbon from the atmosphere. The aim of this study was to determine the composition of vegetation and the potential for carbon stored in the forest region. This research was conducted from September 2021 to March 2022 using a purposive sampling method. Vegetation data were analyzed using the Diversity Index (H'), Uniformity Index (E) using the Shannon-Wiener equation. The carbon stock of each stand per species was estimated using the Ketterings allometric equation. The study documented a total of 64 families, belonging to 297 species with a total of 2,399 individuals. The percentage of composition of all growth rates ranged from 31%-59%. The Importance Value Index (IVI) of all growth rates ranged between 14.3 to 71.7%. The highest diversity index and evenness index at the tree level were 4.71 and 0.85. The stored carbon is 373.227 tons C/ha in West Batang Toru Forest Block, highlighting the forest region as an important green carbon sink.
