Abstract

This study aims at examining the role of culture in learning English as a foreign language. Previous researchers explained that there is an intimate relationship between language and culture. It is obviously mentioned that when someone is willing to learn a language, he also needs to learn its culture so as to master it fully. Therefore, the researcher would like to investigate whether the teachers at school has understood and implemented cultural literacy in the language classroom or not. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative study and gathered the information needed from some English teachers in North Bengkulu. The result shows that the English teachers has been aware of the importance of cultural literacy in English language classroom since it can enhance students’ communicative competence. There are some offered ideas that can be employed in introducing cultural literacy, such as using authentic materials, proverbs, role-play, students as cultural resources, ethnography study, and literature.

Abstract

Abstrak: Bagaimana Menanamkan Nilai-Nilai Islam Pada Anak-Anak: Studi Kasus di PAUD Dewi Masyitoh Orang tua harus berhati-hati tentang bagaimana mereka mengajar dan memperlakukan anak-anak mereka. Salah satu alasannya adalah karena anak-anak memahami informasi di sekitar mereka tanpa memilih dan kemudian menirunya. Sebagai akibatnya, nilai-nilai Islami menjadi faktor penting dalam membangun karakter anak-anak. Saat ini, sebagian besar orang tua menitipkan anak-anaknya ke penitipan anak karena beban kerja mereka menuntut mereka untuk melakukan hal demikian. Oleh karena itu, orang tua harus tepat dalam memilih tempat yang tepat bagi anak-anak untuk belajar. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana para guru di PAUD Dewi Masyitoh mendidik dan menerapkan nilai-nilai ini selama mengajar dan belajar. PAUD Dewi Masyitoh yang berlokasi di Pemalang, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia adalah salah satu tempat penitipan anak yang tidak hanya mendidik tetapi juga menerapkan nilai Islam di kelas. Melalui pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif, peneliti mendapatkan hasil bahwa menanamkan nilai-nilai Islami sejak dini akan melindungi anak-anak ketika mereka tumbuh dan menghadapi masalah nanti. Diharapkan, hasil penelitian ini nantinya dapat memberikan wawasan yang bermanfaat bagi orang tua baru dan para guru sekolah.Abstract : How To Instill Islamic Values To Children: A Case Study at Dewi Masyitoh KindergartenParents should be carefully aware of how they teach and treat their children. One of the reasons is mainly because the children grasp the information around them through adopting and imitating. As a consequence, it plays a significant factor in building children's character. Nowadays, majorly parents send their children to the day-care because their workload demands them to do so. Hence, to be concerned about choosing the appropriate place for children to learn is necessary. Thus, this study aims to examine how teachers in Dewi Masyitoh Kindergarten educate and apply these values during teaching and learning. Dewi Masyitoh Kindergarten located at Pemalang, Central Java, Indonesia, is one of the early childhood educations which not only educates but also applies Islamic values in the classroom. Through a descriptive study that was employed in this study it is believed that by early introduction, it will guard the children as they grow and live. The result of this study is expected to present a beneficial insight for parents and teachers

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze what strategies the teacher used in teaching reading comprehension and how the teacher applies the strategies used in teaching reading comprehension. The subjects of this study were teacher who taught English at SMAN 10 Kota Bengkulu . This type of research is designed as descriptive qualitative research. To collect data in the study,  researcher used Checklist Observation, Interview as an instrument in collected data and documentation. The procedure of this research is by means of researchers coming and participating in seeing and understanding how the teacher teaches reading comprehension in the classroom. The results of the study found that the two strategies used by the teacher, Scaffolding and QARs (Question Answers Relationship). Scaffolding strategy students can develop ideas that can be read by students and make students confident in reading comprehension. QARs (Question Answer Relationship), the teacher is able to know the extent to which students understand what the teacher has given them and the limits of the students' ability to do assignments after reading the text that has been given. Thus, it can be concluded that the teacher is good enough to implement this strategy in the classroom, but was slightly hindered by its application during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to analyze on how the implementation of teaching strategies used by English teacher and the reasons teacher used certain strategies for teaching in SMPN 20 Kota Bengkulu. The subject of this research is English teacher who taught at the first grade in SMPN 20 Kota Bengkulu. The researcher used Roy Killen’s theory to analyze the teaching strategies used by English teacher. The theory of Roy Killen has nine teaching strategies that can be applied by English teacher in teaching and learning process in the classroom. There are direct instruction, discussion, small-group work, co-operative learning, problem solving, research, role play, case study, and writing. The research method used by the researcher was qualitative approach. The techniques of data collection were observation, interview, and documentation. The results of this research show that the teacher used some varieties of teaching strategies which are: direct instruction, discussion, small-group, and role play. The reasons teacher those strategies because those strategies made students more actively on follow the learning process, students could learn together and share their knowledge each other. The teacher used the same strategies for teaching English at first grade, but in term implementation of teaching strategies, the teacher still has difficulties to apply strategies in class during Covid-19 pandemic.
