Abstract

Abstract

The research titled “The Relevance of Sufi Teachings to the Lifestyle of Generation Z” aims to gain an understanding of the lifestyle of Gen Z. This study employs a qualitative research method using interviews, observation, and documentation. Sufism is an esoteric science in Islam, serving as a spiritual path that helps address inner diseases, loss of life’s meaning, and spiritual emptiness. Generation Z may be trapped in a consumptive and hedonistic lifestyle due to living amid strong currents of digitalization and social media. However, there are also members of Gen Z who show tendencies toward Sufi values such as zuhud (asceticism), shukr (gratitude), tawakkul (trust in God), and muhasabah (self-reflection), especially when supported by religious education and a positive spiritual environment. The findings of this study reveal that a contextual and creative Sufi approach through digital media, family environment, character education, and the role of religious figures can help shape a Gen Z character that balances worldly life with spiritual values.

Abstract

This study examines the historical traces of Sriwijaya's influence in the Portibi region through a historical investigation of the Bahal Temple Complex in North Padang Lawas, a site whose role within Sriwijaya's regional network remains insufficiently explored in Indonesian historiography. The study reconstructs the historical background of the temple complex, identifies archaeological and historical evidence reflecting Sriwijaya's influence, and analyzes its significance within the cultural landscape of the Pannai Kingdom. The research employs the historical method through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, supported by field observations, interviews with relevant stakeholders, and documentary analysis of scholarly publications, archaeological reports, and official records. The findings demonstrate that the Bahal Temple Complex, an eleventh-century Vajrayana Buddhist monument, preserves historical traces of Sriwijaya's influence through its architectural characteristics, red-brick construction, spatial organization, Buddhist iconography, and strategic location along an ancient riverine transportation network. These findings indicate that the Portibi region formed part of a wider political, religious, and commercial sphere associated with the Pannai Kingdom under the influence of Sriwijaya. This study contributes to Indonesian historiography by integrating historical, archaeological, and geographical evidence to provide a more comprehensive interpretation of Sriwijaya's regional influence in North Sumatra while reinforcing the historical importance of the Bahal Temple Complex as one of the most significant archaeological legacies of the Sriwijaya period.

Abstract

This study examines the early emergence and subsequent development of the Samaniyyah Sufi order in Pulo Bargot Village, Marbau District, from 1950 to 2025. The research is grounded in the recognition that Sufi orders function not only as spiritual practices but also as influential social forces within local communities. The study employs a qualitative historical approach, utilizing data collected through interviews with religious leaders and community members, complemented by written sources such as books and scholarly journals. The analysis follows the stages of heuristic, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings reveal that the Samaniyyah order began to develop around 1950 through recitation and dhikr practices introduced by local religious figures, with more significant expansion occurring after 2005 through the institutionalization of collective rituals such as communal dhikr, suluk, and other religious traditions. This study contributes to the historiography of local Sufism by demonstrating how a regional tarekat adapts to socio-religious dynamics while sustaining both spiritual authority and social cohesion within the community.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the practice of reciting shalawat through the art of hadrah performed by the youth community in Jatikesuma Village, Deli Serdang. Using a field study method, primary data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of the hadrah players and their mentors. The research findings indicate that the practice of reciting 'shalawat' through the art of 'hadrah' generates spiritual expressions manifested within the players' inner experiences in two primary forms. First, the emergence of mahabbah (divine love) for Allah and the Prophet Muhammad PBUH; second, the internalization of exemplary values and character obtained through the appreciation of lyrics, music, and rhythms that provide a sense of khusyuk (deep devotion). These two forms of values have implications for strengthening the values of Akhlaki Sufism which significantly shape the personality of the youth to become more religious and well-mannered. Thus, hadrah art is effective as a means of spiritual character education in converting Sufistic values into ethical behavior at the grassroots level which is essential to maintain.
