Abstract

This study examined the Effect of the Multimedia Instructional Approach (MIA) on the English writing performance of pre-service Technical teachers in Southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design of the pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design to compare the performance of students. The following research instruments were adopted for the study: English Writing Performance Tests (EWPT) set A and B as well as Multimedia Instructional Software Package. Mean, standard deviation, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that MIA, was effective for teaching English language writing and there is no significant difference between males and females in the English writing performance of the pre-service technical teachers taught through MIA. This study concluded that MIA for English writing is an important variable because it better predicts students’ writing performance in the English Language than the conventional method of teaching. The study, therefore, recommended that teachers of the English language should deploy the use of multimedia technology for instructional delivery in the classroom as it better predicts the students’ academic performance.

Abstract

The study examined the effect of technology-enabled video instruction (TEVI) on senior secondary school students’ performance in selected technical drawing (TD) concepts in Ilorin. The sample for this study consists of an intact class in a senior secondary school in Ilorin. The research adopted a mixed method of quantitative and qualitative research, pre-experimental research of one-group pretest-posttest design. Technology-Enabled Video was used for data collection. The findings from the study revealed that TEVI had a positive effect on the academic performance of students taught selected TD concept, (63.1˃ 51.5), there was a significant difference in the pretest and posttest performance of students taught selected technical drawing concept using TEVI i.e. (df=15, t=-565, p=.000˂0.05). The study concluded that technology-enabled video instruction which is an improvised instructional aid did enhance the academic performance of the students. The study implies that proper integration of technology-based packages like TEVI for instructional delivery will adequately enhance students’ performance. The study Recommended that TEVI should be encouraged among teachers and students, as this will help to boost learners’ interest and provide learners the ability to learn in a direct, self-paced, and individualistic manner, which will, in turn, translate to better academic performance.

Abstract

The essence of basic technology (BT) in the secondary school curriculum is to assist learners to develop an interest in technology and introduce students to the basic rudiment of technology. Thus, BT teachers must use relevant instructional media that would help in achieving the aims of BT in secondary. This study developed and validated a digital photo series to teach BT concepts in upper basic schools in the Ilorin metropolis. The study adopted a design and development model type. Five BT teachers and three educational technology experts were randomly selected to participate in the study. Three research instruments were used in this study, a developed digital photo series on the BT concept, an educational technology expert rating guide, and a subject content validation questionnaire. Digital photo series was successfully developed to teaching upper BT. Educational technology experts agreed that the developed digital photo series satisfied the required expectation. The cost for developing digital photo series was determined. The study concluded that the digital photo series is a powerful instructional tool that can enhance the teaching of BT in Nigeria. The findings imply that schools should adopt the use of digital photo series in the teaching and learning of BT to concretize learning contents and increase students’ performance.
