Abstract

Environmental degradation in Indonesia, including deforestation, marine pollution, flooding, and climate-related crises, has become an urgent challenge requiring not only technical solutions but also ethical and religious responses. Although environmental issues have received increasing attention in contemporary Qur’anic studies, existing scholarship generally discusses ecological ethics and Islamic ecotheology separately from the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah framework. Consequently, a comprehensive interpretive model integrating Qur’anic environmental teachings, Islamic ecotheology, and the higher objectives of Islamic law remains underdeveloped. This study aims to formulate a Maqāṣid-Ecological Interpretation Paradigm to address environmental issues and strengthen Qur’anic environmental ethics in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study analyzes Qur’anic verses concerning khalīfah (Q. al-Baqarah [2]:30), fasād (Q. al-Rūm [30]:41), and mīzān (Q. al-Raḥmān [55]:7–9) through a descriptive-analytical approach. Primary data consist of relevant Qur’anic verses, while secondary data are derived from classical and contemporary tafsīr works, studies on maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, Islamic ecotheology, and environmental ethics. The findings reveal that environmental preservation constitutes an integral part of the objectives of Islamic law, particularly the protection of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl), and future generations (ḥifẓ al-nasl). The integration of khalīfah, mīzān, and fasād provides an ethical framework for addressing deforestation, marine pollution, and the energy crisis. This study proposes the Maqāṣid-Ecological Interpretation Paradigm, which reorients Qur’anic interpretation toward transformative ecological engagement and contributes to the development of sustainable Qur’anic environmental ethics in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the paradigm shift in the interpretation of Q. 4:1 within the corpus of Indonesian Qur’anic exegesis across historical landscape of Indonesian exegesis, an area that has not been systematically mapped using a theory-driven framework. Five primary works were selected as the objects of analysis: Tarjumān al-Mustafīd by ʿAlī al-Fansūrī, Marāḥ Labīd by Nawawī al-Jāwī, Tafsīr al-Azhar by Karim Amrullah, Tafsīr al-Mishbāh by Quraish Shihab, and Tafsir Kebencian by Zaitunah Subhan. Employing Thomas S. Kuhn’s paradigm shift theory and discourse analysis methods, this study identifies three key findings. First, the interpretation of Q. 4:1 has undergone a transformation from a theocentric paradigm, which views the creation of Ḥawwāʾ from Ādam’s rib as its theological basis, to an anthropocentric paradigm that grounds human unity in humanistic and egalitarian values. Second, this shift is also evident at the epistemological level, moving from classical to modern sources, from global to thematic methods, and from disciplinary to interdisciplinary approaches. Third, the paradigm transformation correlates directly with the exegetes' intellectual contexts: Alī al-Fansūrī and Nawawī al-Jāwī reflect traditionalism, Karim Amrullah and Quraish Shihab represent modernism, while Zaitunah Subhan embodies neomodernism. Overall, this study demonstrates that the paradigm shift in Qur’anic exegesis is not merely an exegetical phenomenon but also reflects broader epistemic and ideological transformations in Islamic thought which offer a critical lens for understanding the evolution of religious authority and social values.

Abstract

This study examines the Isra' Mi'raj, the miraculous nocturnal journey of the Prophet Muhammad, through the lens of the tafsir interpretations of Al-Zamakhshari and Al-Razi, with a focus on the differing views of these two prominent scholars. The event, which encompasses the Prophet's journey from the Al-Haram Mosque to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and his ascension to Sidaratul Muta, where he directly encountered Allah SWT, has been subject to diverse theological and interpretative discussions. This article employs a descriptive and qualitative methodology, utilizing library research for data collection and content analysis to examine the relevant tafsīr texts. The comparative analysis reveals that Al-Zamakhshari asserts the event took place at the Al-Haram Mosque in a spiritual form, prior to the Prophet's prophethood, whereas Al-Razi posits that the Isra' Mi'raj occurred in the general Haram area, specifically in the house of Umm Hani bint Abi Talib, a year before the Hijrah, and involved both body and spirit. The study further explores the interpretive approaches of both mufassirun, highlighting differences in their methods, theological beliefs, the location of departure, the timing of the event, and the nature of the ascension itself. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the variances in the interpretations of this pivotal event in Islamic tradition.

Abstract

This study offers a comprehensive analysis of tafsir fiqhi within the framework of madzhāhib al-tafsīr and examines its relevance in contemporary maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah discourse. The background of this research lies in the growing need for Islamic legal interpretation that is not only textually grounded but also capable of responding to emerging socio-legal challenges such as digital transactions, bioethics, environmental issues, and human rights. Unlike previous studies that merely describe legal exegesis as a branch of Qur’anic interpretation, this research re-positions tafsir fiqhi as a distinct exegetical tradition whose methodology is rooted in uṣūl al-fiqh, qirā’āt analysis, and muqāranat al-madhāhib. This study employs a qualitative library-based approach with descriptive-analytical methods, drawing on classical and contemporary tafsir works as well as academic studies on Islamic legal interpretation. The findings indicate that tafsir fiqhi has historically served as a crucial bridge between revelation and legal practice, while in the modern context its ethical orientation can be strengthened through the integration of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. Such integration allows tafsir fiqhi to remain faithful to its classical methodological foundations while ensuring that legal interpretation remains responsive to public welfare and contemporary realities. The study concludes that tafsir fiqhi, when viewed through the lens of madzhāhib al-tafsīr and re-oriented toward maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah retains strong relevance as a normative-contextual framework for modern Islamic legal thought.
