Abstract

One of the implications of the development of neuroscience is neurotechnology. Initially, neurotechnology aims to address brain dysfunction, such as overcoming Alzheimer's disorders that cause memory loss. However, neurotechnology seems to go a step further, i.e. it not only serves to repair brain damage, but also to correct mental phenomena connected to the brain or that are "produced" by the brain, which are associated with memory. Based on this, the question arises, whether it is possible that neural technology improves and replaces human memory. Nevertheless, these neurotechnical efforts seem to ignore the meaning of memory itself, including what actually "builds" memory, so that humans can have different feelings of memory. Thus, to answer this problem, the author first interprets memory explicitly through a clear difference between semantic memory and episodic memory, to show that human memory, which is an episodic memory, is associated with qualitative states. Second, by describing the opportunities presented by neurotechnology through mind experimentation regarding neuron replacement by electronic chips, to demonstrate the impossibility of neurotechnology functioning in the same way as neurons in the brain that produce episodic memory with these qualitative states. Therefore, based on these arguments, it will be known that neurotechnology is actually impossible to improve, especially replacing human memory.

Abstract

Secularism is a condition of the times we live in today. It gives awareness to the global community that in reality there is only the immanent—there is no God. So, theism is seen as just one of the many options available: atheism becomes even more attractive to embrace. Generally, a theist will respond by demonstrating the plausibility of theism through positive arguments for the existence of God. The author rejects this and offers an approach from Reformed epistemology, as a thesis on how one knows God, to the problem. Through Reformed epistemology, the author views secularism as what is understood as a cognitive environment. As a cognitive environment that prevents the “knowing subject” from knowing God, the authors point out that the appropriate response to secularism is to include the “knowing subject” into the liturgy. Thus, liturgy can also be understood as an act that has an epistemic dimension that enables a person to know God.

Abstract

This journal article aims to explore Martin Heidegger's concept of thinking about building and dwelling, and how it is interpreted in the world of architecture, especially contemporary architecture. Heidegger, an important philosopher in the 20th century, proposed revolutionary ideas about architecture that went beyond the traditional view of buildings/dwellings as inanimate objects. He expressed his views on the relationship between people, place, and space and how humans actually space in space (earth as space), and the importance of understanding the essence of” building and dwelling” properly. He also postulated about how this thinking influences the world of contemporary architecture and what are the criticisms and shortcomings that need to be critically examined.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to present a different reading from the mainstream interpretation that corners Schopenhauer: a consistent interpretation. The authors use a method of acquiring knowledge by acquaintance and description. Schopenhauer’s theory is often considered inconsistent because it concludes will as a thing-in-itself. The will, which is obtained through direct observation of the body, is a representation that is still shrouded in the veil of time form, while thing-in-itself is completely different from representation, and is beyond the reach of space, time, and causality, with reference to principle of sufficient reason. Concluding will as a thing-in-itself is therefore considered inconsistent. However, this interpretation might be wrong because Schopenhauer never claimed that direct observation of the body would yield knowledge of the thing-in-itself. From the very beginning, he realised that direct knowledge of thing-in-itself was impossible, because the knowledge, regardless of its form, was always knowledge of appearances. He knows that will does not qualify as a thing-in-itself. The true function of the will in Schopenhauer's metaphysics lies in the name and concept by which one can think about thing-in-itself objectively.

Abstract

Abstract

The local wisdom of Indonesia has long been considered philosophy proper by a number of Indonesian thinkers; they proclaimed that “Indonesian philosophy”, or “filsafat Nusantara”, does exist. Based on a number of studies of Indonesian thoughts—some of them called themselves “philosophy”—that underwent the hardness test in the forms of comparative philosophy and ethnophilosophy/ethno philosophy/ethno-philosophy, what is referred to as Indonesian philosophy does not yet meet the requirements to be classified as such. The hardness test involved tracing a number of representative literatures and comparing the outcomes with the two tests. This article shows that ideas thought to be called philosophy actually fall under ethnophilosophy or ethno philosophy category. The study also illuminates a deficit in Indonesian’s philosophical thinking, which is the absence of either reception or refutation of preexisting ideas; there is no response to reveal the presence of dialectics—one of philosophy’s traits. Facing that situation, and thanks to the two hardness tests, this article offers the propaedeutics required for Indonesian thought to be in line with the great philosophies of the world.
