Abstract

Evapotranspiration is an essential part of water availability analysis and crop water needs that are useful to estimate irrigation water demand. Since discharge measurement stations are limited, the analysis of water availability is the most important part of water management planning. Citarum watershed is the biggest watershed in West Java, supplies raw water to Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Modified Penman is the common equation to analyze evapotranspiration, which was developed by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and modified for tropical areas. Evapotranspiration is one term of the water balance equation. To determine water losses, it is necessary to solve this equation. Another source of evapotranspiration data is provided by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite's standard product, MOD16A2. In order to used the evapotranspiration satelilite data to fullfill the lack of groud station data, the reliability of satelite data is needed. The objective of this study is to compares and analyzes the reliability of satellite evapotranspiration potential images with the numerical Modified Penman method at Citarum Watershed. Modified Penman is one of several methods that calculate the evapotranspiration potential based on climate data. MOD16A2 was used for simulation data, and Modified Penman was used for baseline data. The reliability of the two simulations was analyzed by the skewness percentage of each pixel and period. The distribution of percent skewness indicates the performance of satellite evapotranspiration on the Modified Penman that represents the actual condition. The sensitivity of satellites is greatly affected by local weather conditions.

Abstract

A large-scale horticulture crops practices in addition to land use / land cover changes in the upper Serayu Hulu catchment has been reported as the most responsible factor of the sedimentation acceleration in the downstream hydropower plant reservoir. This acceleration may become a serious problem for the hydropower plant because it would shorten the reservoir lifespan from the initial estimation. The problem could be further worst if the soil conservation practices application is still limited and land use / land cover changes that tend to increase run-off keep on progress. One of such situation in contrast has been occurred during 1997 - 1998 when financial crisis hit the country followed by the succession of the political regime. Due to the above situation, land use / land cover changes in the period expanded into higher elevation and slope. On the other hand, financial crisis has limited the attention of the horticulture crop farmers in applying soil conservation practices. This paper shows that those two factors together with climatic condition have increase the soil detachment in the hillslope before and after the country financial crisis and political regime succession in 1997 – 1998 by more than 100%. However, the soil detachment rate was then decreasing after some years even though still higher than before 1997

Abstract

Agricultural drought occurs in various irrigation areas in Indonesia, one of which is the Jatiluhur Reservoir’s irrigation area. Agricultural drought in this area occurs due to several factors, including the natural phenomenon of climate anomalies which causes the length of the dry season, and also due to less optimal irrigation networks, damaged networks and other obstacles. But, not all agricultural land in the irrigated area experiences drought. Agricultural land affected by drought is important to know its spatial and temporal distribution to determine priority locations in drought disaster management, especially on agricultural land. Therefore, this study aims to examine the spatial pattern of agricultural drought in the irrigation area of the Jatiluhur Reservoir from 2000–2020. The index used in this study is the Normalized Difference Drought Index (NDDI). MODIS image version MOD13Q1 is used by dividing the dryness class into three classifications, namely dry (>0.5), rather dry (0-0.5), and normal (<0.5). The results showed that the most extensive drought in rice paddy fields occurred in 2015 with a dry index of 8574.19 Hectares. Meanwhile, agricultural drought in this area occurs on average from June to September, especially in the Jayalaksana Village and Setialaksana Village, Bungin Sub-District, Bekasi Regency. These two villages are affected by agricultural drought every single year. The spatial pattern of agricultural drought shows that it follows the pattern of the irrigation network. It is necessary to investigate the correlation between agricultural drought and irrigation network in the next research.
