Abstract

A retrospective study was done on 25 cases of Neonatal Meningitis from 1972 up to 1980 at Dr. Pimgadi Hospital Medan. Their age variation was from one day to one month. The early prominent symptoms were refusal of feeding in 23 cases (92%), decrease of consciousness in 21 cases (84%), fever in 16 cases (64%}, convulsion in 15 cases (60%) and vomiting/diarhea in 8 cases (32%). Diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms and Cerebrospinal fluid examination.

Abstract

A retrospective study on tuberculous meningitis had been carried out on 43 patients at the Department of Child Health, Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan during the year 1979. The peak incidence (55.81%) was found in the age group of less than 3 years of which 55.81% was in the second and 44,18% in the third stadium of the disease. Two of the cases were 4 months of age and 1 case was 14 years. None of the cases had got BCG immunization. Mortality rate was 37.21% of which 25% was in the second and 52.63% in the third stadium. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed that 46.50% had cell counts between 101-500 cells/mm3. The symptoms were prolonged fever (62. 79%), convulsions (72.09%) and unconciousness (27.90%). Of these cases 83.72% had contact with tuberculous patients; 6.9% had positive tuberculin test and 48,83% showed pulmonary involvement on radiological examination. Nutritional status of these cases showed that 48.83% were undernourished and 34.82% were in poor nutritional status.

Abstract

A retrospective study of epilepsy cases had been done from January 1978 to December 1982. The aims of this study was to know the incidence, type and result of treatment of epilepsy in the Department of Child Health Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan, Indonesia. 103 cases of epilepsy were investigated. This was 0,10% of total patients in OPD as well as inpatients during this period, consisting of 56,32% boys and 43,68% girls. According to the classification of the Intemational League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) all of the patients had generalized epilepsy, consisting of 68,93% primary generalized epilepsy and 31.07% secondary generalized epilepsy. Thus the incidence of epilepsy was low, with a preponderance of primary generalized epilepsy. Of these patients only 18.44% came regularly for control. They were treated with a single drug namely phenobarbital, with good results.

Abstract

A retrospective study 10 find out the incidence of hydrocephalus in the Paediatric Neurology Subdivision Department of Child Health, School of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan, was carried out in the period of 1986- 1989. The number, age groups, causes and treatment were reviewed. The cases consisted of 45 children; 28 males (68.2%) and 17 females (27.8%). Most of the patients (34 = 75.5%) were found in the age group of 1 year or younger and the rest (11 = 24.5%) were tn the age group of more than I year. The youngest was 2 days old and the oldest was 5 years and 6 months old; 33 cases were congenital, 5 cases were acquired and 7 cases were unknown causes. Conservative treatment were introduced to almost all cases, and four cases had ventricular peritoneal shunt.

Abstract

A descriptive cross sectional study to have normal values of the bead circumference of under one year old children in Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan had been done during january to February 1990. The sample size determined based on formula, was 356 (178 boys and 178 girls). Each sex group was devided proportionally by age in months. Only children with good nutritional status and middle to high socio economic level were included in this study. The mean value of the head circumference is still in the range of the mean of Nellhaus standard. Tbe Nellhaus standard can be used as a standard of bead circumference of under one year old children at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan.

Abstract

Tuberculous meningitis was studied descriptively in 167 cases (1 .19%) of 14082 hospitalized patients at the Department of Child Health Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan in a period of the years 1985 to 1989. The highest incidence was in the age group of under 3 years (46.11%) consisting 20. 78% of the stage I, 54.55% stage II, and 24.67% stage III. The youngest age was five months (2 cases) and the oldest was 14 years old (3 cases). The case fatality rate was 27.54%, they were 2.17% stage I, 32.61% stage II, and 65.22% stage III. Stage III showed higher mortality rate than stage I and II (p <0.001). The most frequent symptom was convulsion (43. 71%) followed by fever (33.53%) . Contact with patients who bad pulmonary tuberculosis were found in 56.28%. Positive tuberculin test was found in 17.96% and pulmonary radiological abnormalities in57.48%. The highest number oj cases (51.50%) was group with cerebrospinal fluid cell count of 101 - 500/mm · Cases which never got BCG immunization comprised 83.83%. The nutritional states on admission to the hospital were mild / moderate malnutrition in 67.07% and severe malnutrition in 32.93%.

Abstract

A retrospective study had been done, to find out the incidence of hydrocephalus during 1984-1985 in the Pediatric Neurology Sub Division of the Child Health Department Medical Faculty University of North Sumatera/Pirngadi Hospital Medan. The number, age groups, causes and treatment were reviewed. The cases consist of 17 children, 9 males (52,09%) and 8 females (47,01%). Most of the patients 12 (70,58%) were found in the age group of 1 year or less, and the others 5 (29,42%) in the age group of more than 1 year. The youngest was 1 year of age and the oldest 3 1/2 years. Six cases were caused by congenital abnormalities, 1 case by meningitis and in 10 cases the probable cause was unknown. Conservative treatment had been given to all cases.
