Abstract

A retrospective study was done on 25 cases of Neonatal Meningitis from 1972 up to 1980 at Dr. Pimgadi Hospital Medan. Their age variation was from one day to one month. The early prominent symptoms were refusal of feeding in 23 cases (92%), decrease of consciousness in 21 cases (84%), fever in 16 cases (64%}, convulsion in 15 cases (60%) and vomiting/diarhea in 8 cases (32%). Diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms and Cerebrospinal fluid examination.

Abstract

We performed a prospective study on the association between acid-base balance and asphyxta based on Apgar scores in 45 newborn babies admitted to the Division of Perinatology, Pirngadi Hospital, Medan, from January 1 to February 28, 1993. Blood gas analysis was done on blood obtained from umbilical artery. Based on 1st and 5th minutes Apgar scores, 40 (88.9%) and 21 babies (46.7%}, respectively, had asphyxia. Relation to acid-base balance was determined with the sensitivity of the 5th minute Apgar score in predicting acidotic states. It was found that Apgar score had sensitivity of 57.7% and specificity of 68.4% in predicting the acidotic states. Apgar score of > 7 was unable to. exclude the possible acidosis in 45% of cases (negative predictive value 54.1%). Gestational age had no influence on Apgar Scores. Apgar score was more sensitive to eliminate suspected acidosis in term neonates than in preterms. We recommend to perform umbilical arterial blood gas analysis to determine acidotic state in high risk newborn infants.

Abstract

A retrospective study on diarrheal manifestation in newborn babies was conducted at the ward of Neonatology, Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan from January to December 1988. There were all 3367 babies hospitalized during the study period. One hundred and thirty five (4.0%) had diarrhea, including 106 (78.5%) babies with birth weights of ≥2500 gram. Of 2478 babies with spontaneous delivery, 14 (1.4%) babies had diarrhea, while of 889 babies with obstetrical intervention delivery 101 (11.4%) babies had diarrhea. The difference was statistically significant (pL. 0.001). Of 115 babies with diarrhea, there were 81 (60.7%) with moderate and 11 (23.0%) wirh severe dehydration. The mortality rate was 47.5% in patients with accompanying diseases and 0.0% in them without. The mortality rare in babies with birth weights < 1500 gr was 37.9% and 16.9% in babies with birthwejghts ≥2500 gram (p<. 0.001). The mortality rste increased with the increase of dehyrotion (p<0.03).

Abstract

From January 1980 to November 1980 a survey on the relationship between birth weight (BW) with body length (BL), head circumference (HC) and chest circumference (CC) was carried out on 1689 newborn infants bom in the Dr. Pringadi General Hospital Medan. They were divided into six groups, based on their BW i.e.: Group I : 1501 - 2000 g Group II : 2001 - 2500 g Group Ill : 2501 - 3000 g Group IV : 3001 - 3500 g Group V : 3501 - 4000 g G1011p VI : 4001 - 4500 g The average of BL, HC and CC in cm is shown below: The mean values of total BL, total HC and total CC can represent the anthropometric values for the certain BW group. No significant differences were found between male and female newborn infants in each group.
