Abstract

Thyroid hormone deficiency early in life causes severe and reversible brain damage. Fetal and neonatal hypothyroidism usually occurs in association with: a) Environmental Iodine deficiency producing endemic cretin b) Sporadic congenital hypothyroidism. In Indonesia 12 million people are suffering from endemic goiter and there are roughly 100,000 endemic cretins. Adequate Iodine supply in affected areas, which is now a National Health Programme, will diminish the birth of endemic cretins in the next decades. The sporadic congenital hypothyroidfsm (CHT) is due to anatomical abnormality or malfunction of the tyroid gland. If treated before the age of 3 months, fourfifths of the children will attain an IQ above 92. The only alternative is screening of all newborns for CHT, which is now a standard procedure in most of the developed countries. The incidence around the world is 1 : 3000- 4000 live births.

Abstract

Of 336 full-term, newborn male tnfanrs, penile diameter, length, and volume of the testis were measured. All of the infants were Indonesians. The penile stretched length was 2.86 ± 0.23 cm and the diameter 0.82 ± 0.33 cm. There was statitiscally a significant correlation between penile length and gestational age (P<0.01), but no significant correlation between penile length and testicular volume, body length, body weight, or head circumference.

Abstract

Thyroid hormones play an important role in the metabolic propesses. Its disturbances will involve several organs, consequently. A 5 year old girl with Graves' diseases, after several weeks of treatment with propylthiouracil (PTV), developed thyrotoxicosis crisis and diabetes mellitus with ketoacidosis; a condition which is usually fatal. Treatment toward the hyperthyroid state overcome the diabetic stage, eventually. This report is an example of an endocrinological interaction in a hyperthyroid patient. Therefore, the diabetogenic effect of hyperthyroxinemia should not be overlooked.
