Abstract

This research paper aims to investigate the contrasts in the relationship of two racial entities in the United States, African American maids and the White socialites, particularly in the segregation era (1960s). Findings and criteria of analysis were drawn from a movie called The Help (2011) with Peirce’s semiotic approach and descriptive method. Based on the observation during movie screening and literature review, the root problem happening between two groups is the disparity of previledge and socioeconomic status based on race. Besides the intangible background, signs of segregation also appeared in the movie, such as Confederate Flag of Mississippi, separate toilets, and the attires. That context demonstrates that the white socialites have stronger position over the African American maids in which the white socialites appeared as the rich and good-looking employers who treated the maids with unequal acts and accusations. This situation has not ceased to exist in real life as in American society especially when it is supported by hate and, also, government policy.

Abstract

Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) merupakan kebijakan dari Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia yang mendorong mahasiswa dan juga para dosen untuk meningkatkan kompetensi dengan melakukan kegiatan kolaborasi berbasis pendidikan di luar institusi. Tentunya, kebijakan ini juga melalui proses adaptasi di dalam pelaksanannya di berbagai perguruan tinggi, salah satunya Universitas Pembangunan Jaya. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis peluang dan tantangan dari pelaksanaan MBKM dengan studi kasus di Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pengisian survey, wawancara, dan juga focused group discussionkepada 8 dosen dan 110 mahasiswa. Setelah data diperoleh dan diolah, peneliti menganalisis masalah secara deskriptif dengan pendekatan campuran. Hasil dari penelitian mengatakan bahwa kanal informasi yang mudah diakses serta adanya peningkatan kapasitas diri setelah mengikuti kegiatan MBKM menjadi peluang yang baik sehingga para dosen dan mahasiswa ingin merekomendasikan kegiatan ini kepada rekan-rekan mereka. Namun, sosialisasi yang kurang optimal serta penyesuaian kredit dan materi antarinstansi menjadi tantangan paling besar dalam pelaksanaan kebijakan ini. Diskusi terbuka dan diseminasi tentang kegiatan MBKM serta pencarian informasi melalui buku panduan merupakan solusi untuk menjembatani peluang dan tantangan demi kelancaran program pemerintah ini.

Abstract

Sexual harassment could happen everywhere, including workplace and university. This involves any person who has the opportunity to do the misconduct. Information about sexual harassment is now available on many media platforms, whether it is printed or online. As a group of young people who are highly aware of social problems, Gen Z circle have spoken up about this particular issue, starting from their own social network to national level. This study aims to explain the students’ reception towards sexual harassment case on media which took place in a private university in Depok, West Java. The author will lead the discussion into three categories, the causative factors, the forms, and students’ resistance of sexual harassment. The data collected from 122 students involved in focused group discussion and 4 students were interviewed. An article from Indonesian online media regarding sexual harassment was presented and the research allows the student to react to the news. The results show that student participants believe sexual drive is the main factor and any form of sexual harassment could happen if there is not consent. They disagreed if the perpetrator was treated badly like in the news, even though protection for the victim should be prioritized.

Abstract

Film is a medium that delivers social phenomenon that happens in the middle of society and certain messages for a problem. In a film, every character has different personality, especially when it comes to family. ‘Old’ (2021) tells a story in which a family spend their quality time at a holiday resort to create bonding moments. One day, they were invited to a secret beach and it turned out they grew older very quickly. That was when the conflict started and the integrity of a family was being challenged. This paper will discuss how communication within a family is analyzed from the view of interpersonal communication which is affected by conflict and social dynamic. The author will apply qualitative approach with content analysis method. From every scene that taken on this paper, the author will deliver the result of analysis into five components, such as openness, empathy, support, positive feeling, and commonality. The result shows that, from all five components, family communication addressed by the members takes them to unity and care, not something that can break them or conflicts

Abstract

President Prabowo Subianto officially won presidential election in 2024 and began his administration effectively in October. He had some plans and policies to support national development, including food security and the expansion of palm oil plantation. These sectors are against ecosystem conservation and climate change prevention so that the issue became a controversy among the people. Through his official speech, President Prabowo did not mention environmental issue, whereas he put other sectors as top priorities. Media caught the event and and public paid attention as well. This research aims to analyze the framing on President Prabowo's political communication regarding environmental issue. The analysis was conducted with framing theory of Robert N. Entman including his four main components, define problems, diagnose causes, moral judgement, and treatment recommendation. Two media which were observed by the researcher are Tempo.co and Betahita.id with qualitative approach. Researcher also applied Agenda Setting theory with critical discourse approach to see how media perceive the President in addressing the weakness in governance and lacking of relevant knowledge. Meanwhile, Betahita.id assessed that President Prabowo's narrative on environmental issue is a form of his carelessness towards human rights issues and his partiality with irresponsible corporations.
