Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the cultural translation errors in aspect of gender and racial discrimination in movies subtitles The Help and Hidden Figures. This study used a qualitative approach and content analysis method by Krippendorff (2004). This qualitative study was in descriptive qualitative approach. While content analysis use was conversational analysis. Conversation in both movies subtitles were used as data of the study especially the conversation which was the part of gender and racial discrimination. The finding of this study was in form of cultural translation errors in conversation that contained gender and racial discrimination. The result showed, there were four kinds of cultural translation errors in aspect of gender and racial discrimination in movies subtitles The Help and Hidden Figures. They were (1) word choices translation errors; (2) number translation errors; (3) translation errors in cultural material; and (4) translation errors in comprehended SL in the text. All the errors found influeced information and message that delivered to the viewers.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the positive politeness strategy of speech acts in Tere Liye's Bidadari-Bidadari Surga novel. This research is a qualitative research with content analysis method. The data were collected through literature study and polite observation in speech acts on Tere Liye's novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga. The data analysis uses Brown and Levinson's politeness theory. These findings indicate that Tere Liye's novel Bidadari-Bidadari Heaven contains a positive politeness strategy. The strategy of positive politeness includes fifteen positive politeness strategies and in the form of thirty-nine kinds of mannerisms spoken by the characters of the story.Keywords: Strategy of positive politeness, speech acts, novel

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the value of the existence of women from the figure of Raihana in the novel Pudarnya Pesona Cleopatra by Habiburrahman El Shirazy as a wife figure who became the dream of all men, but not for her husband. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research data was taken from the reception of class X TKR students of SMK Bina Karya 2 Karawang as primary data obtained from interviews and secondary data were sentences in the novel Fading Pesona Cleopatra. Data analysis uses data classification stages, data analysis according to categories, and conclusions. The results showed that the value of the existence of Raihana figures can be seen from the nature of sholehah, merciful, obedient and not easily discouraged. Raihana has described the figure of a gentle woman in dealing with various problems and attitudes from her husband who were not pleasant. In conclusion, students understand the figure of Raihana as a figure who is very good and has the value of intelligence that is able to provide balance to the husband.
