Abstract

Plants are an important source of traditional medicines that can be used to improve health. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) has long been recognized to have many benefits. Cinnamon was used traditionally as a remedy for arthritis, diarrhea, allergies, and ulcers. This literature review aimed to identify the bioactive compounds and bioactivity of cinnamon. Literature searches used PubMed and Google Scholar. A total of 55 full-text articles met the inclusion criteria of the review. The extract or essential oil of cinnamon contains many bioactive compounds, such as eugenol, cinnamic acid, linalool, β-caryophyllene, coumarin, and trans cinnamyl acetate, and 1.8 cineole. These compounds have several bioactivities including anti-cancer, anti-arrhythmia, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-cholinesterase, and anti-lipid oxidation. Cinnamon extract has excellent potential as an antioxidant and antidiabetic agent. Its potential and unique taste have contributed to its wide use in herbal remedies.

Abstract

Cloves is one of the native Indonesian plants and is used in many aspects of life. Cloves are used in multiple industries and as detergents, soaps, perfumes, food seasonings, aromatherapy, etc. Cloves are mainly used for ingredients in kretek cigarettes in Indonesia. Various studies of cloves reported they have good pharmacological and therapeutic effects. The main compounds of clove extract are eugenol and β-caryophyllene, which are powerful antibacterial and antifungal agents. The clove ethanolic extract showed the activity to inhibit Gram-positive and negative bacteria such as B. cereus, S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. pneumonia, S. aureus,S. epidermidis, A. hydrophila, K. pneumoniae, P. gingivalis, and P. mirabilis . Clove essential oil has shown the ability to inhibit the growth of V. inaequalis, C. Albicans, C. glabrata, and C. tropicalis. Cloves extract can be used as an essential ingredient in various medicines. However, it requires further research and trials.

Abstract

Abstract. Citrus nobilis lour fruit. var. microcarpa (C. nobilis) or Pontianak Orange is a food source with good vitamins and antioxidants, while the peel was considered as waste. Along with technological development, people processed it by utilizing its essential oil. Research showed that the essential oil of Pontianak orange peel (C. nobilis) could inhibit the growth of some gram-positive and -negative bacteria. Still, the compounds' composition and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have not been studied much. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the active compound composition, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of C. nobilis essential oil. The essential oil from C. nobilis peel was extracted using the clavenger method. The GCMS methods was used for active compound profiling. The antioxidant activity of essential oils was examined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The dominant active compound components in C. nobilis essential oil were limonene, β-myrcene, and linalool. The essential oil of C. nobilis had robust antioxidant activity (IC50 13.114 µg/mL) compared to BHT. The content of the dominant active compound in the essential oil supported this activity.
