Abstract

This study aims to conduct an analysis based on available data sources (meta-analysis) on the trend of using virtual simulations in learning to support critical thinking. The SCOPUS database was used as the data source in this study. This meta-analysis study was conducted in December 2021 by including the keywords “virtual, simulation, learning, and critical thinking” in the search documents section on the SCOPUS page. In the initial search, 112 documents were found, this includes all “subject areas, documents, and source types” and in the range from 1999 to 2021. Not a single document was found under 1999. The subject areas included are social sciences, computer science, and others (a total of 23 subject areas). Contains 8 documents and source types (articles, conference papers, book chapters, and others). The results are documented in (.csv) and (.ris) files. The files are processed using Microsoft Excel for document graphic visualization by year, print screens of SCOPUS data sources for document types and subject areas, and comprehensive analysis of quantitative data displayed on SCOPUS data sources. Finally, the results in this study show that the research trend of virtual simulation in learning to support critical thinking has penetrated in many fields. The assessment of SCOPUS primary data sources shows journal articles as the most “document and source type” (50%) followed by conference papers and others. In addition, social science is the most document “subject area” (28.2%) followed by computer science and others.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of virtual reality (VR) videos as asynchronous e-learning supplements on improving student learning outcomes. This study is an experimental study, using two sample groups (experimental and control). The experimental group was taught by presenting virtual reality (VR) videos connected to e-learning in the LMS, and the control group by traditional (face-to-face) or expository learning (without VR). Research participants in each sample group were 24 early semester students who programmed a basic natural science course at the Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika (UNDIKMA). The groups were given the initial task as a pretest, learning treatment, and the final task as a posttest. Learning assignments and descriptions of learning materials are related to the theme of 'climate change.' Test instruments (essays) were employed to measure students' cognitive learning outcomes. The test instrument used fulfills the validity aspect as a psychometric property of the instrument. Data were analyzed descriptively (n-gain parameter), and statistically (analysis of mean differences using independent sample t-test) at a significance level of 0.05. The results of the descriptive and statistical tests showed that there was a significant impact from the application of virtual reality (VR) videos as asynchronous e-learning supplements to the improvement of student learning outcomes. Our findings confirm that virtual reality (VR) videos as asynchronous e-learning supplements are better at improving student learning outcomes when compared to traditional face-to-face (expository) learning. More detailed results are presented in this article.

Abstract

The intensity of the implementation of learning with the online system during the Covid-19 pandemic certainly has an impact on the learning process and the results that have been achieved. In the process of implementing it in a sustainable manner, it is necessary to evaluate, especially in the aspect of student perceptions as beneficiaries of the implementation of the online learning system during the Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically, this study aims to determine the perceptions of prospective teacher students about online learning interaction patterns during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study is an exploratory descriptive study involving 107 respondents, they are prospective-teachers at one of the private universities in Mataram City, Indonesia. The online questionnaires were filled out by considering accessibility, therefore the convenience sampling technique was used. Perceptions of prospective teacher were measured using a closed questionnaire instrument. Each prospective teacher responses are degraded based on a Likert scale. The questionnaire instrument is composed of 10 items of questions or statements, it contains aspects of online learning interactivity. Prior to application, the psychometric properties of the instrument must be met. The psychometric properties used are aspects of instrument validity. Before being applied, the questionnaire instrument was validated by experts, and the results of the instrument have been declared valid. Data analysis was carried out statistically. The differences in perception by employing the ANOVA test (p < 0.05). The findings of the study indicate that the perception of prospective teachers is 'sufficient' regarding online learning interactions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Aspects of the online learning experience for prospective teachers in each department showed that there was no significant difference in the perception of prospective teachers about online learning interactions during the covid-19 pandemic (significance of 0.213 > p, 0.05). The findings in this study can be the basis for improving the online learning process by universities, where this can be optimized so that in the future online learning services can be even better. As it is known that the online system is the only choice of the best learning mode during the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, we see the online system as a learning trend that does not last a short time, but becomes a new direction of learning now and in the future.
