Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam bentuk program sosialisasi pendidikan dilaksanakan untuk mendukung program pemerintah Kabupaten Sleman dalam meningkatkan Angka Harapan Lama Sekolah (HLS) anak-anak terhadap pendidikan formal. Progam ini merupakan serangkaian kegiatan yang terdiri dari sosialisasi pendidikan, perawatan dan penambahan koleksi buku perpustakaan mini dusun dan kegiatan pendampingan belajar. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini antara lain (1) memberi kesadaran terhadap masyakat akan pentingnya wajib belajar 12 tahun; (2) meningkatkan minat berkunjung dan membaca buku di perpustakaan mini dusun; dan (3) meningkatkan minat belajar peserta didik diluar jam sekolah. Beberapa langkah yang dilakukan untuk melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian ini, antara lain adalah (1) analisis situasi, yaitu kegiatan yang dilaksanakan untuk mengumpulkan data hasil pengamatan serta memetakan temuan permasalahan  yang ada di lapangan; (2) perancangan kegiatan, dilakukan untuk merumuskan solusi yang akan diimplementasikan; dan (3) Penerapan kegiatan, dilakukan berdasarkan  rencana yang telah dirumuskan. Dampak sosialisasi ini kepada masyarakat adalah memberikan mereka motivasi pendidikan dan aktivitas pemberdayaan masyarakat.

Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 mengharuskan para siswa untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris secara daring (dalam jaringan), tak terkecuali siswa MTs Al-Muhsin II Bangunjiwo. Melalui wawancara dengan kepala madrasah, selama pandemi para guru hanya mengandalkan aplikasi WhatsApp sebagai media pembelajaran dan penugasan adalah satu-satunya metode yang digunakan. Hal ini dikarenakan karena para siswa tidak memiliki kuota internet yang mencukupi untuk mengakses aplikasi meeting seperti Zoom,Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, dll. Pembelajaran yang menitikberatkan pada metode penugasan juga telah mengakibatkan para siswa merasa jenuh dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris serta tidak mendapatkan pendidikan karakter islami khas madrasah. Metode penyelesaian yang digunakan pada program ini adalah pendampingan belajar dengan menggunakan aplikasi yang dikembangkan sendiri oleh tim. Program ini berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan grammar siswa dari rata-rata 66.85 ke 82.6, serta memupuk kembali nilai-nilai karakter pendidikan islam. Pengabdian dan pendampingan belajar dilaksanakan selama 3 bulan sehingga tim pengabdi dapat melakukan proses evaluasi yang akan digunakan untuk penentuan program lebih lanjut.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing students’ speaking anxiety in EFL classroom at occupation level. It investigated EOP students’ speaking anxiety levels, their sources of anxiety and their coping strategies to reduce it. This research involved eight students from two classes with different English abilities and employed a qualitative research design, embracing the characteristics of a case study conducted in PT Rekacipta Miratama Bekasi from December 2016 to March 2017. Three kinds of instruments were applied for this research: classroom observation, questionnaires (adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale by Horwitz), and semi-structured interview. The data were collected by means audio and video recording to capture students’ sources of anxiety and their coping strategies and collaborated with a semi-structured interview. Those data were transcribed and coded by using the categorization from Alwasilahs’ coding strategy (2002) and obtained by quantifying questionnaires in order to know the students’ anxiety levels. The first finding reveals that the students who categorized as an anxious and a mildly anxious level had the highest percentage (each of them was 37%), while those who categorized as a relaxed and a very relaxed level had the lower of percentage (each of them was 17%). Secondly, the research participants who categorized as an anxious and a mildly anxious level stated that all FLA sources that are a communication apprehension, a test anxiety, and a fear of negative evaluation had similar percentages (each of them 33.34%). Lastly, coping strategies that all anxious students used in this research were anticipation that belonged to compromise behaviors. Abstract

This paper aimed at investigating the main causes of English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) students’ speaking anxiety. The study involved a total of eight students from two different classes with varying levels of English proficiency. It focused on a case study conducted in an Indonesian company and utilized three types of research instruments, namely classroom observation FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale) questionnaires by Horwitz (1986) and semi-structured interviews. The study revealed that experiences in communicating, the kind of students’ occupation and Foreign Language Acquisition (FLA) are the main causes of EOP students’ speaking anxiety.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the strengths and weaknesses of teaching speaking by using LMS-Edmodo based on the teacher’s perceptions. This research is a qualitative descriptive approach that involved one teacher as a participant. Observation, documentation, and interview are three kinds of instruments which were applied to this research. The data were collected by using three stages of qualitative analysis (Miles & Huberman, 1994), which were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Based on the teacher’s perception, the strengths of teaching speaking by using Edmodo are its economy, privacy, simplicity, and flexibility. On the other hand, time-consuming, harm to the teacher’s health, slow loading if The aim of this research is to explore the strengths and weaknesses of teaching speaking by using LMS-Edmodo based on the teacher’s perceptions. Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought many complaints and impacts on human activities, especially in the world of education. Until now, the Covid-19 pandemic caused by the Coronavirus still hits and spreads widely in the community. In this case, schools implement an online learning system or online from their respective homes. Online learning activities carried out by class VIII students at SMP PGRI Kasihan are learning activities that have never been carried out by students whose lack of knowledge and abilities regarding online learning.The purpose of this study was to find out the teacher's strategy to overcome student learning problems during online learning. This study uses a qualitative method approach that is used to obtain information on student learning constraints as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic on teaching and learning activities at SMP PGRI Kasihan. The data collection technique used observation, interviews, and documentation.The results that there are several obstacles experienced by students in online learning activities, namely not having mobile phones, internet quota fees, and not having social media platforms for example Zoom, Google Meet, and Google Classroom applications. The strategy used by teachers at SMP PGRI Kasihan to overcome students' learning difficultie in participating in online-based learning in class VIII is to hold meetings with students twice a week, providing encouragement and motivation.

Abstract

Melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini, tim pengabdi memberikan pelatihan pengembangan media pembelajaran untuk pembelajaran Bahasa asing berbasis IT kepada pengurus, dan pembimbing. Media pembelajaran dikembangkan menggunakan Microsoft Power Point yang diintegrasikan dengan aplikasi Sound of Text. Remaja Masjid Bilal Bin Robbah beranggotakan remaja–remaja muslim yang tinggal dekat masjid. Sebagaimana remaja pada umumnya, handphone dan Laptop merupakan dua alat komunikasi hasil perkembangan teknologi yang sangat disenangi oleh remaja masjid Bilal Bin Robbah. Orangtua dan para pembimbing remaja masjid khawatir para remaja masjid ini terpengaruh oleh dampak negative penggunaan Handphone dan laptop tersebut. Kemampuan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab juga menjadi kekhawatiran orang tua dan pembimbing karena para remaja tersebut mengaku kesulitan dalam mempelajarinya padahal dua bahasa tersebut sangat penting saat ini. Media pembelajaran yang dihasilkan dalam pelatihan dan pendampingan diimplementasikan pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab kepada anak–anak binaan remaja masjid. Kegiatan pengabdian ini memberikan manfaat bagi para pendamping dan remaja masjid sebagai kegiatan pengembangan bahasa asing dengan memanfaatkan informasi teknologi sebagai media belajar. Hasil dari penelitian, para remaja masjid merasa senang karena dapat mengulang kembali media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab dimanapun dan kapanpun. Suara, cara membaca atau pengucapan kedua bahasa tersebut dalam Power Point mempermudah mereka dalam belajar. Through this service activity, the service team provides training in developing learning media for IT-based foreign language learning to administrators and mentors of youth mosque. Learning media was developed using Microsoft PowerPoint which is integrated with the Sound of Text application. The youth of the Bilal Bin Robbah Mosque consist of Muslim youths who live near the mosque. Like teenagers in general, cellphones and laptops are two communication tools resulting from technological development that are mostly liked. Parents and mentors for mosque youth are worried the negative impact of using those tools. The ability to use English and Arabic is also concern for parents and supervisor as those two languages ​​are very important at this time. These teenagers admit that they have difficulty in learning them. The learning media produced are implemented in learning English and Arabic for children. The service activity provides benefits for mosque assistants and youth as foreign language development activities by utilizing IT as a learning medium. For the result, the youth of the mosque feel happy because they can repeat learning English and Arabic in any occasion. Voice, how to read or pronounce the two languages ​​in Power Point make it easier for them to learn.
