Abstract

Ceplukan (Physalis minima L.) has long been used to treat various conditions in traditional medicine. This study aims to demonstrate the anxiolytic effects of Methanol Extract of Ceplukan Leaves (MECL) in the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) test and correlate to IL-6 level of ovariectomized rat brain. Total of 24 Wistar rats were divided into six groups: one normal group, one group of 1 month ovariectomized (ovx), one group of 2 months ovx, three groups of 2 months ovx (each given with MECL 500; 1500 and 2500 mg/kg doses for 1 month). The anxiety-like behavior level was measured by EPM test. After EPM test, the brain was removed to measure level of IL-6 by ELISA. The data were processed and analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation. We found that the MECL-treated rats enter the opened-arm higher than the control rats. It indicates that the MECL-treated rats are less anxious than the control rats. The results also show the decreased of IL-6 level in MECL-treated rats.

Abstract

Endophytic fungi residing within the tissues of the Moringa tree, including its leaves and stems, demonstrate the capability to produce compounds with effects similar to those found in their host plant. Moringa, recognized as a source of bioactive components, is frequently employed in traditional medicine to treat various ailments. The aim of this research is to isolate endophytic fungi from the leaves and stems of the Moringa tree, showcasing potential as antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial activity is assessed through inhibitory assays targeting the growth of pathogenic microbes, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Candida albicans. A total of nine endophytic fungi isolates were successfully obtained from the Moringa tree, consisting of isolates D2a1a-Ft, D2a1b-Ft, D2b-Ft, D3a-Ft isolated from leaves, and isolates B1a-Ft, B1b-Ft, B2a-Ft, B3a-Ft, and B3b-Ft isolated from stems. Among these isolates, D2a1a-Ft, B2a-Ft, and B1b-Ft exhibited potential as antimicrobial agents. Results from antimicrobial activity assays indicate that D2a1a-Ft can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli, B2a-Ft can impede the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis, while B1b-Ft can hinder the growth of Candida albicans. The largest inhibition diameter, measuring 7.2 mm, was observed in the case of B1b-Ft against Candida albicans.
