Abstract

Language shift means replacing one language to another as a communication tool within a community. This study intends to investigate the factors that cause language shift among Acehnese and its impact to the young generations of Acehnese language users. The study reveals that there are two factors causing a shift in Acehnese language, namely: the external factors (i.e., culture, economy, and inter-generational transfer) and (2) internal factors (i.e, language attitude and language ability). In addition to the impact of language use, the study points out that although most of the Acehnese people are able to speak their own community language, their children are rapidly losing their language.

Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the difficulties faced by students when speaking English at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Banda Aceh. The study aimed to identify these difficulties and explore the underlying factors contributing to them. A mixed-methods research design was employed, involving questionnaires and interviews. The participant of this research was 21 eleventh-grade students. The findings indicated that students face various challenges in speaking English. They encountered obstacles in grammar (43% expressing concerns), fluency (15% citing regional accents as a barrier), pronunciation (15% experiencing difficulties), and vocabulary (43% uncertain about their proficiency). The study highlighted the need for tailored support to address these issues effectively. Additionally, the research explored factors contributing to these difficulties, including inhibition (43% lacking confidence), "Nothing to Say" during activities (24% finding it challenging), the availability of conversation partners (86% do not face a shortage), and the influence of the mother tongue (57% finding their native language easier). The study concluded that these multifaceted factors influence students' English-speaking abilities.

Abstract

In Aceh, English is still taught as foreign language and its teaching practices have experienced a rapid growth in the last decades. This qualitative phenomenological study investigates the complex experiences of TESOL lecturers, examining their perspectives towards this issue, exploring teaching methodologies used, and challenges faced in contemporary language education contexts. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews with five experienced lecturers at English Education Department of UIN Ar-Raniry Aceh, this study explores the multifaceted nature of English language teaching. The study reveals that successful TESOL instruction transcends traditional linguistic pedagogy, requiring sophisticated, adaptive strategies that integrate technological innovations, cultural sensitivity, and personalized learning approaches. Key findings highlight the critical importance of flexible teaching methodologies to empower the students in English communication, technology integration to maintain students’ motivation in English learning, and continuous professional development in addressing the dynamic needs of language learners. The study demonstrates that effective TESOL lecturers navigate complex educational landscapes by continuously adapting their pedagogical practices to meet evolving student needs and global communication challenges.
