Abstract

The biodiesel synthesis through alcoholysis process of triglyceride from Jatropha curcas using different type of alcohol, such as: methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and tert-butanol, was conducted in the presence of potassium hydroxide (KOH) as catalyst under 35 kHz frequency ultrasound irradiation. The optimum conditions, such as: alcohol to jatropha oil molar ratio, concentration of catalyst, reaction temperature, and reaction time, were found  to be 7:1 of alcohol to jatropha oil molar ratio, 0.5 % of KOH, temperature of reaction at 35 0C, within the reaction times of 15 minutes. The results obtained for the different types of alcohol were 62.77 %, 57.93 %, 51.64 %, and 46.77 % for methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and tert-butanol, respectively.

Abstract

Abstract

One industry that needs attention is Samarinda's woven sarong business. This industry produces liquid waste that is produced from the coloring process using De Congo Red which is an organic dye. Discussing the business of Samarinda's woven sarong industry discharges its waste directly into the Mahakam River around the house or weaving location which will cause a harmful impact on the environment. The main process in this research is adsorption with active bentonite to determine differences in activated bentonite particles in the adsorption process. The performance of the adsorption process through the parameters of BOD, COD, TSS and, pH of the liquid waste. The adsorption process was carried out by mixing active bentonite and Samarinda waste woven gloves with 0.25 grams: 1 mL. The mixture is then stirred for 1 hour at a rotational speed of 468 rpm. The size of the active bentonite was varied by 210, 230, 270, 310, 330, 370 and 400 mesh. The results of this study have proven that active bentonite has 400 mesh more than the BOD, COD, TSS and pH values according to the standard requirements according to the Decree of the Governor of East Kalimantan No. 26/2002. Also involved were 34.5 mg / L, 64 mg / L, 168 mg / L and pH 8.

Abstract

Microwaves have been used in various organic synthesis applications. The use of microwaves provides many advantages, including relatively short start-up and heating times, energy efficiency and process costs, easy and precise process control, selective heating, better final product quality, and improved dry material quality. Microwaves were used in this study to convert chitin into chitosan and to determine the effect of deacetylation time on the degree of deacetylation of chitosan, which was in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7949:2013). The chitin deacetylation process was carried out by varying the heating time to 5, 7, 11, and 15 minutes with a power of 350 W. Two grams of chitin were mixed with 40 mL of 70% NaOH solution in a beaker. The mixture was put in a microwave at a constant temperature of 70 °C. Chitosan was washed until neutral and then dried in an oven. The degree of deacetylation (DD) was analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that A deacetylation degree of 79.96% was achieved at a reaction time of 15 min. The water content of chitosan was determined to be 9.15%.
