Abstract

This research aimed to identify the types of code switching and the students? perception about code switching used by the English teachers in the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sawan. This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this research were the eighth grade students and the eighth grade English teachers. The instruments used in this study were observation sheet, questionnaire, and interview guide. The results of this research showed that there were three types of code switching used by the English teachers. The data showed there were (31.7%) of intra sentential code switching, (54.8%) of inter sentential code switching and  (13.4%) of inter personal code switching.The results of the questionnaire showed that the average responses of the students were (70.74%), it means that students were catagorized to have positive perception about the use of code switching by the English teachers. The interview shows that the students had positive response about the use of code switching by the English teachers. There were two reasons concerning the students? positive answer, that is, code switchings that make the students understand the material more easily, and code swicthings that reduce the students? stress in learning.

Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk (1) memerikan variasi pemakaian Bahasa pada masyarakat tutur  Kota Singaraja dalam kaitannya dengan wangsa, pekerjaan dan umur, dan (2) menguraikan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi terjadinya variasi tersebut. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, peneliti menerapkan pendekatan mixed method dengan melibatkan 120 subjek penelitian yang diperoleh melalui secara purposive dengan memperhatikan kriteria wangsa, pekerjaan dan umur. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket, wawancara dan perekaman.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan  bahwa ada 3 variasi bahasa  pada  masyarakat tutur kota Singaraja yang terkait dengan tipe subjek. Pemakaian BA sebagai variasi dominan dipakai oleh tipe penutur TAD, TBD, TCD dan TCM. Mereka adalah kelompok penutur dari tri wangsa dari tipe pekerjaan yang bervariasi dan didominasi oleh umur tua. Sedangkan, variasi pemakaian BI  didominasi oleh tipe subjek TAM, TBM, NAM dan NBM. Kelompok ini merupakan usia muda dari kelas sosial (pekerjaan) menengah ke atas, dan tri wangsa dan jaba. Terakhir, pemakaian BB didominasi oleh tipe subjek NAD,NBD, NCD dan NCM. Kelompok ini merupakan kelompok jaba dari tiga tipe pekerjaan dan didominasi oleh umur tua. Variasi pemakaian bahasa yang berbeda tersebut terkait erat dengan identitas yang ingin diproyeksikan oleh subjek (penutur).

Abstract

Language development affects human speech. Speech is the way of communication. The purpose of communication involves how the information can be transferred to each other. People accommodate their communication in daily life to achieve the goal of communication. Another possible purpose which is expected by communicator is showing an identity. It can be done by using strategy based on Communication Accommodation Theory. Communication accommodation strategy is divided by two, divergence and convergence strategy. Phenomena of the use of convergence and divergence exist on students of English Language Education of Ganesha Univerisity of Education. English Language Education students are prepared as a teacher who needs prior knowledge about communication strategy that is expected for communication skill development. The population of the study is students of English Language Education of Ganesha University of Education who are from each regencies in Bali. This study used qualitative method with descriptive design which is expected can describe the use of Convergence and Divergence strategy within the reason of using each strategy. The variables being analyzed are speech rate, pauses, utterance length and lexical accommodation. The data is collected through observation and interview session. The result of study shows that students are possible to use multiple strategy in each variable based on current circumstance. The circumstance involves the place, interlocutor, intimacy, and speech community. All students uses convergence strategy in all variable and three of them use divergence strategy lexically. The reason of using each communication accommodation strategy is taken from communication accommodation theory.Keywords: Communication Strategy, Communication Accommodation Theory
