Abstract

Reading comprehension means the ability to know the meaning of the information provided in the reading text. This comprehension is influenced by various aspects. This research focused on the use of reading strategy as one of many aspects that affect reading comprehension. The researcher determined to investigate the effectiveness of the 3-2-1 strategy when employed in reading comprehension especially on narrative text. This research aimed at investigating the effect of using 3-2-1 strategy on students’ reading comprehension achievement. The design of this research was a quasi-experimental research. The participants were the eighth grade students of junior high school. The result in the form of post-test scores was analysed by using Independence sample t-test in SPSS computing system. Based on the calculation of the data analysis, the significant value was 0.046 which was less than 0.05 (p<0.05). The result indicated that there was a significant difference. Therefore, it can be concluded that the 3-2-1 strategy gave a significant effect on the students’ reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

Rap songs could be challenging and interesting media and teaching materials for students to follow the English teaching and learning process, especially pronunciation. The design of this study was a quasi-experimental research with posttest only.  The two classes were chosen as the experimental group and control groups by considering the result of the homogeneity test. The experimental group was given the treatment of English pronunciation using rap songs, while the control group was given conventional treatment using drilling. Posttest was given to both groups. The data were analyzed using non-parametric statistics that is, the Mann-Whitney U test. The sig value of the Mann-Whitney U test by using SPSS software was 0.000 and that was less than 0.05 with 95% of the significance level. It means that the null hypothesis was rejected, thus alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of using rap songs on students’ pronunciation achievement. These results are in line with the statement of some researchers that songs are good factors that could be enjoyed and motivate learners. The learning process that uses rap songs provides a means for teachers to easily incorporate music into their teaching.

English is a foreign language (EFL) for Indonesian students. Therefore, many students still get difficulties to comprehend an English reading text that they read. To overcome the problem, this classroom action research investigated how to improve the students' active participation and their reading comprehension achievement by using Semantic Mapping technique. The research participants were the eighth-grade students at SMPN 8 Jember. Based on the results of the observation and a reading comprehension test, it can be concluded that the implementation of Semantic Mapping technique could improve the eighth-grade students’ achievement in reading comprehension of descriptive text. The research results also showed that the students became more fun and more actively participated both individually and in a group during the teaching and learning process of reading comprehension.
