Abstract

This paper describes secondary data analyses that investigate the impact of gender, parents’ education level, and socio-economic status upon Turkish students’ mathematics achievement in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009. The analyses were done quantitatively using t-tests, one-way ANOVA, correlation and linear regression. The findings revealed that gender differences and Turkish students’ mathematics performance are statistically significant but practically not significant. Parents’ education level had an impact on Turkish students’ mathematics achievements. The index of Economic, Social and Cultural Status (ESCS) had a positive effect on mathematics achievements and ESCS was a significant predictor of Turkish students’ mathematics performance. The findings seem to suggest that at the school level, the school environment is expected to build students’ motivation in learning, and the teachers in the classroom setting are expected to provide extra hours and learning consultation services for students who need it. At the student level, students were expected to have high motivation in learning and are suggested to not rely on learning facilities provided by their parents. However, further research is required prior to making any recommendations on school policy, teaching, and learning practice in the classroom setting.

Abstract

This study aimed to select and identify Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Students' at Sorong City having mathematical Olympiad skills using Matematika Nalaria Realistik (MNR) Learning Model. Through this model, it will be analysed students' mathematical thinking skills, including mathematical comprehension skills, mathematical communication skills, and mathematical reasoning skills. The subject of this research was 33 students in 5th grade and two students in 6th grade at MI Sains Al-Hidayah Sorong City. This study applied the design research method with three phases, namely, preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. Data on students' mathematical thinking skills were obtained through pre-test and post-test using descriptive analysis in each phase. Results of this study in the preliminary design involving 35 students were obtained pre-test (1) average was 9,74; (2) standard deviation was 15.72. The results of the teaching experiment phase were obtained post-test (1) average was 13,57; (2) standard deviation was 13,75; and (3) an increase of 39,32%. The results of the retrospective analysis involving 7 students were obtained pre-test (1) average was 38,28; (2) standard deviation was 23,09. In the post-test was obtained (1) average was 72,28; (2) standard deviation was 9,81; and (3) an increase of 88,77%. Thus MNR model contributed significantly to improve students' mathematical thinking skills. From 7 students participating in the final phase, three students had good skills, and four students had moderate skills

Abstract

This paper explores curriculum 2013 in conjunction with education for sustainable development in Indonesia. Reorientation in education could be considered as an effort for producing skilled human resources in order to deal with transition period toward sustainable development. Curriculum 2013 should be focused on issues referring to education for sustainable development. Learning approach in curriculum 2013 should be combined with educational learning and teaching about knowledge, issues, skills, perspective, and values that lead to student much more motivate to achieve the goals of sustainable development through respect- ful to the others either current generation or the next generation, respectful to the earth that provides natural resources for the human beings.
