Abstract

Working as a journalist is still aspired by some of Indonesia’s young generation, called the millennials. However, the media industry landscape in Indonesia is rapidly changing in recent years due to digital disruption. Several printed media have to work hard to adopt digital tools as a publication platform to reach news consumer, while others have desperately managing to expand its audience applying convergence strategies. Meanwhile, some media industries which could not compete in the digital market have decided to stop their publication. Since 2014, there were several media stop operating their production. In many cases, the media closure is followed by termination of employment among journalists. This study finds that it has not only impacted the future of the former journalists but also has caused precariousness condition for a young journalist. These journalists were the young generation, or the millennials age 24-35 years. Some of the millennials had worked for more than a year and enjoyed the privilege as a journalist. But when digital disruption came and hit the media where they worked, most of these young age journalists had not registered nor joined in a labor union that could have helped advocate them when facing disagreement with the media company. Besides, from 2014 to 2017, it is a difficult time for the journalist to adapt in the midst of the transition from conventional media to digital media. Keyword: digital disruption, young journalist, media closure

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to present an analysis toward TV One as one of Indonesian television stations, whether it works in line with the concept McQuail's media performance and the concept of empathy journalism coined by Ashadi Siregar. TV One coverage on the missing Air Asia QZ 8501 is purposively selected to be analysed using case study method. The data collected is analyzed based on disaster journalism perspective and ethical guide on Broadcasting Code of Conduct and Program Standards (P3SPS). The missing Air Asia QZ 8501 at the end of December 2014 shows TV One prioritized speed and sensationalism in delivering the story, rather than considering on the kind of news that ideally received by the audience. This articles highlights the way TV One covered the Air Asia tragedy, mainly on its breaking news which reported the finding of floating dead bodies on the ocean few days after the accident.

Abstract

Digital disruption has fundamentally eroded traditional media business models, forcing legacy outlets to seek alternative revenue streams. This study analyzes the institutionalization of sponsored news, internally termed “collaborative content”, at Harian Kompas as a survival strategy. Adopting a constructivist qualitative case study approach, the research integrates semi-structured interviews with six key informants, newsroom observation, and internal document analysis to examine how the organization navigates the tension between commercial necessity and journalistic integrity. The findings reveal that Harian Kompas has formally institutionalized sponsored news by establishing a dedicated Collaborative Content Desk. This entity employs a “non-approval” mechanism to ensure editorial independence from partners, while editorial leadership utilizes “roso” (editorial intuition) as a critical ethical filter for partner and theme selection. Despite these safeguards, the study identifies persistent challenges, notably collaborators’ resistance toward transparent content labeling and the emergence of subconscious bias among field journalists. The study demonstrates that Harian Kompas, as a hybrid media organization, actively negotiates the balance between market survival and the preservation of core journalistic values in the digital era. This finding highlights how legacy institutions institutionalize sponsored content while striving to maintain editorial integrity, thereby contributing to broader discussions on the transformation of media organizations under digital disruption.
