Abstract

Abstract

Working as a journalist is still aspired by some of Indonesia’s young generation, called the millennials. However, the media industry landscape in Indonesia is rapidly changing in recent years due to digital disruption. Several printed media have to work hard to adopt digital tools as a publication platform to reach news consumer, while others have desperately managing to expand its audience applying convergence strategies. Meanwhile, some media industries which could not compete in the digital market have decided to stop their publication. Since 2014, there were several media stop operating their production. In many cases, the media closure is followed by termination of employment among journalists. This study finds that it has not only impacted the future of the former journalists but also has caused precariousness condition for a young journalist. These journalists were the young generation, or the millennials age 24-35 years. Some of the millennials had worked for more than a year and enjoyed the privilege as a journalist. But when digital disruption came and hit the media where they worked, most of these young age journalists had not registered nor joined in a labor union that could have helped advocate them when facing disagreement with the media company. Besides, from 2014 to 2017, it is a difficult time for the journalist to adapt in the midst of the transition from conventional media to digital media. Abstract

YouTube can now be categorized as mainstream media. It can be seen as a disruptive force in business and society, particularly concerning young people. There have been several recent studies about YouTube, providing essential insights on YouTube videos, viewers, social behavior, video traffic, and recommendation systems. However, research about YouTube uploaders has not been done much, especially YouTube uploaders from ASEAN countries. Using a combination of web content mining and content analysis, this paper reviews 600 YouTube uploaders using the data of Top 100 favorite YouTube uploaders in six ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines), which are retrieved from NoxInfluencer. The study aims to provide a wider picture of YouTube uploaders' characteristics from six ASEAN countries. This study also provides useful information about how to retrieve web documents using Google Web Scrapper automatically. The study results found that the entertainment category dominated the top 100 positions of the NoxInfluencer version. In almost every country analyzed, channels related to news and politics are less attractive to YouTube users. For YouTube uploaders, YouTube can be a potential revenue source through advertising or in collaboration with specific brands. Through the analysis, we discovered that engagement is the critical factor in generating income in the form of likes, dislikes, and comments.

Abstract

One of the main functions of mass media is providing information. At the same time, the access to information is everyone's right. Therefore, the mass media have to open the possibilities for people to access information, including disabled people. Act. Number 8 of 2016 concerning disabled people also mandates this right. The act will come into force in 2018, so various parties need to make various preparatory efforts, including conducting research. This study aims to map online news sites that are friendly and unfriendly to disabilities. To achieve this goal, researchers use standards in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to map online media in Indonesia that are friendly to access for disabled people. To obtain this information the researchers conducted a quantitative study of 62 cyber media sites in Indonesia by measuring the level of accessibility of the media to disabled people. The findings indicate that there are no cyber media sites in Indonesia that are friendly to access for disabled people. Sites like Riau24.com, Manadonews.co.id and Ayobandung.com are sites with the highest percentage of success among the 62 sites analyzed.

Abstract

Climate change poses a significant threat globally. Due to the heavy nature of the issue, climate change news tends to be very negative. Overly negative news can cause psychological disruption and make people avoid the news. The news media plays a huge role in climate mitigation, adaptation, and people’s perspectives on climate change, making it crucial for them to communicate climate change effectively. Constructive journalism may be the solution to this issue. With constructive journalism, journalists avoid negativity bias by focusing not only on the negatives but also on the solutions and positives when reporting a story. This study conducted a quantitative content analysis on 123 climate change articles reported by Kompas.com in 2020 using the six elements of constructive journalism. This research found that Kompas.com’s climate change articles in 2020 were not constructive. The articles emphasized the consequences of climate change with minimal constructive elements to balance the negativity.

Abstract

Smartphones and social media have changed how the media gather, produce, edit, and disseminate news. By employing the journalistic capital concept, this paper examines how journalists in Kompas.com, one of the pioneers of online media in Indonesia, incorporate mobile journalism practice into their work. This article explores how journalists and newsrooms respond to change that coincides with mobile devices and social media in the newsroom. The qualitative data analysis obtained from in-depth interviews with Kompas.com journalists and document analysis revealed that the application of mojo in Kompas.com is relatively new and is still looking for a form. Kompas.com integrate mobile smartphones into journalistic work to produce stories with a multimedia approach to meet changing journalistic and business needs. Journalists are expected to produce journalistic content in short videos using mobile devices related to daily events around them. Thus, the practice of mojo emerged as a new order in journalism. Kompas.com develops a multimedia division and improves journalists’ skills through training on all desks in the newsroom. Journalists learn new applications and tools and produce short videos for social media.

Abstract

Multidisciplinary research conducted by CEST (Center for Earthquake Science and Technology) ITB states that there is the potency of a tsunami up to 20 meters on the south coast of West Java and up to 12 meters on the south coast of Blitar, East Java occurs following the 8.8 MMI megathrust earthquake. Community and stakeholder preparedness is inevitable and should be implemented immediately. The South Lebak Mitigation Group (GMLS) is a community-based initiative to do a collective and collaborative program in disaster preparedness and responses based on local wisdom patterns. The Universitas Multimedia Nusantara’s community services program (PKM) aim to increase disaster literacy towards people of Panggarangan village and its surrounding in the Panggarangan sub-district in the southernmost of Lebak Regency. According to the situation analysis, local wisdom-based communication and media deployment is rarely used. This is the reason why the PKM program is aimed at the objective of creating communication agents at the household level through Satu Rumah Satu Pendongeng (One House One Storyteller) Training of Trainers (ToT). This ToT program also aimed to ground the activity of storytelling towards children within the family to create an individual that can face disaster. The program consists of a knowledge enrichment and storytelling workshop. The knowledge enrichment teaches the basics of storytelling, and the modality to tell stories while the workshop focuses on developing supporting tools for storytelling and storytelling simulation. abstract in bahasaRiset lintas disiplin CEST (Center for Earthquake Science and Technology) ITB menyebutkan akan adanya potensi tsunami dengan ketinggian maksimal 20 meter di wilayah selatan Jawa Barat dan 12 meter di selatan Blitar, Jawa Timur yang didahului dengan gempa megathrust sebesar 8,8 MMI.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has driven up news media consumption worldwide. However, the concomitant rise of misinformation and disinformation has disrupted the dissemination of verified information, particularly in the digital media. The role of the press has been challenged. This research aims to measure the public perception of Covid-19 reporting in Indonesia and how the public responds to the news. This research processes data using text analysis and cross-tabulation to understand the pattern and correlation between variables. Most respondents agree that the media has done a good job in reporting on Covid-19 and distributing the information to the public, with few leaning towards a more neutral tone. However, social media ranks first as the most popular platform to search for Covid-19-related information, followed by online media and television. Despite the generally positive assessment over the role of media and the quality of Covid-19 reporting during the pandemic, most respondents limit the amount of time they spend on and the quantity of Covid-19-related news they consume as they experience sadness, loneliness, and disappointment.

Abstract

As a country located in the Circum-Pacific Belt area, Indonesia is vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. A research mentioned that there would be a potential tsunami with a maximum height of 20 meters in the south of Java Island. Community preparedness in dealing with potential disasters is essential and has a high level of urgency. UMN partnered with the South Lebak Mitigation Group (GLMS) to organize disaster literacy strengthening activities to meet the Tsunami Ready indicators, primarily the preparedness component for disseminating information. This activity emphasizes disaster communication to increase public awareness and knowledge of the importance of disaster mitigation. The target participants and locus of activity are Panggarangan Village, Panggarangan District, and Lebak Regency, residents. Activities include research on citizen disaster literacy mapping, deployment of communication product, and citizen journalism training. The results of the mapping research show that information about disasters with local content is still limited in terms of quantity and quality. To that end, each communication product was made to fit the local context of the South Lebak community. Furthermore, media literacy and citizen journalism training was held so local communities could produce and fulfil their own information needs.abstract in bahasaIndonesia sebagai negara yang berada pada area Circum-Pasific Belt rentan mengalami bencana alam gempa bumi dan tsunami.
