Abstract

The application of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) and MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) based technology in language learning in the classroom is not new in this era. A variety of applications are available for free on the internet. However, the knowledge of teachers in Indonesia about the functions and ways of implementing these applications is still low. With this training, it is hoped that teachers will be increasingly able to use CALL and MALL-based applications and explain the pedagogical side simultaneously.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a skill that should be developed to enable students cope with 21st century challenges. Critical Listening class is one of the compulsory subjects in English Language Education Study Program of Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta which goal is to enhance students critical thinking whenever they listen to particular information. However, the instrument to measure the students’ critical listening skill has not been developed yet. Therefore, this study aims at developing an instrument to develop students’ critical listening skill. The study was started by developing the conceptual definition and operational definition of critical thinking and critical listening. Afterwards, a set of instrument containing of 40 items were developed. Identifying instrument content validity is the first step the focus of this study. The instrument items were then validated by 3 experts. The result of this study showed that 30 items on the instrument was considered valid as they had I-CVI ranged from 0,8-1. The other 10 items were deemed to be invalid since the I-CVI is lower than 0,78. The result of this study encouraged the researcher to revise the instrument and improve the validity of the items.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the relationship between students critical thinking and vocabulary mastery in Critical Listening and Speaking classes at a university in Yogyakarta. This research focused on knowing the relationship between students' critical thinking and vocabulary mastery of semester 4 students at a university in Yogyakarta. The population of this study were fourth semester students who were taking Critical Listening and Speaking courses. This research employed is quantitative design. In collecting data, researchers used questionnaires and tests. The research sample consisted of 15 students at an English Education Study Program. A vocabulary test using https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/english-level-test/vocabulary was used to investigate students’ vocabulary mastery. Meanwhile, a formative assignment was employed to gain students’ critical thinking level. To analyze the data, Pearson product moment correlation was used. The exploration discoveries show that there was a positive correlation between critical thinking skills and vocabulary mastery in CLS class with Sig. = 0.934. In this way, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is acknowledged and null hypothesis (Ho) is dismissed. The importance of this assertion is a basic critical thinking skills impacts vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ perception on the implementation of Literature Circle in ER class. The design of this research was qualitative design research. This research was designed based on the problems identified and arranged to adjust the main purpose of the research so that the researcher employed a descriptive method. The researcher took 10 students as the sample of this research. The instruments of this study were observation and questionnaire. The researcher used questionnaire forms consisted of fifteen numbers of questions included in aspects of perception. Another instrument was an observation rubric.  The findings of this research were; (1) the principles of ER have not been fully implemented in the Extensive reading class (2) Student's Perception of the implementation of the literature circle activity in ER Class has good benefits for students such as high interest and motivation in Extensive reading; (a) cognitive aspects, the Literature circle helps the Students to improve their reading skills and give them the freedom to choose books for pleasure, 77,8 %; (b) Literature Circle is an effective approach for the Extensive Reading class,55,6 %; (d) affective aspects increased student engagement, the utilization of Literature Circle methods fostered greater student involvement in the learning process,77,8 % , and conative aspects implementing the Literature Circle strategy actively involves students in reading while fostering their independence. Literature Circles serve as a cooperative learning tool that encourages students to take ownership of their reading choices and promote autonomy in engaging with personally selected texts, 66,7 %.

Abstract

The aim of this long research process was to identify students' abilities in writing recount texts and to find out the difficulties students faced in writing these texts. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. There were 22 class X students of SMK Diponegoro Depok, Sleman, Yogyakarta who were selected as the research sample and were selected voluntarily for collection purposes. There are two instruments used in this study, namely the student written test. To analyze the data, the researcher identified the students' internal errors in the students' reconnaissance writing test which were categorized according to Jacobs et al. (1981). The results showed that the students' ability to write recount texts was in the poor category, with an average score of 54-25. However, according to the results of the data, students experienced some difficulties in writing recount text essays. The results of the analysis show that students make the most mistakes in terms of language use, spelling, mechanics, and content with an average score of 4-5 and are categorized as very bad. knowledge in grammatical form. Therefore, to overcome this problem, students must learn to write more because their skills in using language and mechanics are still low and teachers must provide more opportunities for students to practice writing and develop strategies, media and learning methods. which focuses on aspects of the use of language and mechanics that will improve students' abilities, especially in writing recount texts.

Abstract

The blended learning model is a learning model that is popularly used, especially after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, because blended learning combines face-to-face learning that interacts directly between teachers and students with online learning that utilizes the development of technology. In utilizing the blended learning model, Moodle is used as one of the LMS. In implementing the use of technology such as Moodle, there must be an adaptation of its use. Different factors influence and determine technological acceptability and adaptability. The objective of this study was to investigate the students’ behavioral intentions in using Moodle as an LMS in English class at SMK Negeri 3 Magelang and to know the students’ suggestions to improve the performance of Moodle as an LMS in English class at SMK Negeri 3 Magelang. As the research's theory base, an extended version of the technology acceptance model (TAM) was used. This study used a quantitative design where data were obtained from questionnaires, interviews, and observations with 142 students in the English class at SMK Negeri 3 Magelang. The data was analyzed using the Structure Equation Modeling (SEM) technique. The research findings revealed that the factors perceived credibility, satisfaction, attitude, and perceived usefulness positively influenced the students’ behavioral intentions in using Moodle as an LMS in English class at SMK Negeri 3 Magelang. Students also provide suggestions for improving the performance of Moodle by improving the quality of Moodle itself, improving the quality of each feature, fixing existing constraints, and adding various other interesting features.
