Abstract

The Philosophy of translation is excluded from the framework of translation studies. Nevertheless, it is actually essential for developing the theory and practice of translation aswell as solving both internal and external challenges toward the theory and practice oftranslation. Hence, this article proposes the inclusion of philosophy in the framework andoffers a communicative-functional paradigm as the philosophy of translating from Indonesianinto English and vice versa. This paradigm construes translation as interculturalcommunicative act directed by the target-side purpose. It is rooted ontologically as therecodification of matrix code into target code which results in what Ricoeur calls as theequivalence without identity, epistemologically with the employment of cluster concept andaxiologically by directing intercultural mediation with three ethical principles i.e. the primacyof purpose, the loyalty to people and the respecting difference. In Indonesia especially inYogyakarta, based on the interview conducted to professional translators in PéMadInternational Translation, this paradigm has been internalized by Indonesian translatorswithout conscious reflection of the paradigm as the philosophical foundation of theirtranslation practices. Keywords: translation, philosophy, communicative-functional paradigm

Abstract

Being aware of reading strategies becomes the key of readers’ success in reading process, this study began with its purpose to investigate the readers’ awareness of metacognitive reading strategies while facing academic reading texts. Then, the respondents here were whole 50 students of English department, who had completed the questionnaire of Survey of Reading Strategies Awareness (SORS). Those respondents were intended to reveal the type of reading strategies used during reading academic materials in English. The results of study revealed that those respondents were aware of using two of three categories of reading strategies while reading the materials. As the detail, the results showed that the respondents mostly tended to use the strategies categorized in Problem Solving Strategies (PROB) in order to solve their obstacle in reading.  Global Reading Strategies (GLOB) as second place, which is mostly used by the respondents. And the last or the lowest strategies in use are Support Strategies (SUP).

Abstract

The phenomenon of phonological error as the common sense in pronouncing the words not only happens among beginners but also among the advanced English learners. The English learners are also active speakers who use English as their second language used such as in a formal situation. They tend to pronounce the same for words that have same spelling as other words in most parts of the words or even thewhole words but of different parts of speech. The present writers’ study tries to answer the question on how the English learners’ pronunciation is influenced by words with the same spelling. The participants of the study were Indonesian college students who learned English at the advanced level. In order to get the data, they were given word lists that contained a number of words and then asked to pronounce them. These words were suspected as common mistakes pronounced by the advanced learners. For example the word ‘determine’ is pronounced the same as the word ‘mine’, the word ‘preface’ is pronounced as ‘face’. In this study, the result reveals that the English learners tend to pronounce the words that refer to other words that contain the same orthography. Orthographically, the words and part of the words have the same spelling but they do not share the same pronunciation. Therefore, this error is commonly found among English learners even among those of the advanced level.

Abstract

The application of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) and MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) based technology in language learning in the classroom is not new in this era. A variety of applications are available for free on the internet. However, the knowledge of teachers in Indonesia about the functions and ways of implementing these applications is still low. With this training, it is hoped that teachers will be increasingly able to use CALL and MALL-based applications and explain the pedagogical side simultaneously.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of gender differences on the making of mathematical cross-stitch art symbols and students’ learning outcomes. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The study used observation, interviews, documentation, and students’ learning outcomes tests as research instrument. This research has been conducted in the crafts subject at SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta class XI. Meanwhile, the results of midterm and final exam were used for all students of class XI. This study revealed a significant difference between male and female students when completing the cross art of mathematical symbols. Female students are found to be able to complete the art within 1 month, while male students have not been able to complete the cross stitch. Furthermore, the average scores obtained during midterm and final exam between male and female students also have quite significant differences, in which female students show higher learning outcomes than male students. It is in line with the completion of the cross-stitch assignment given in the craft subject where female students have better abilities in completing the cross-stitch art.

Abstract

Recently, the use of AI-powered writing tools has become so popular among different academics participants globally. It promises to make the writing process smoother, improve learning, and give personalized feedback. Yet, alongside the benefits, the technology has provoked another possibility regarding its misuse and the overuse on academic integrity. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the possible uses/ benefits and missuses/ threat of the use of AI-powered writing tools (ChatGPT & Quillbot) from students’ point of view. This study applied a qualitative study by menas of phenomenological approach. The participants were 8 students from 4 universities who have used those applications for their academic writing projects. Semi-structured interviews related to ChatGPT and Quilbot emphasis were conducted for the collection of data. The collected data identified through the interviews were analyzed through thematic analysis. The study found that participants use AI-Powered tools as feedback provider, writing assistant and problem solver for the deadlock. Nonetheless, they also revealed that the use of this AI tools could lead them to dependency, plagiarism and reduction of their crititical thinking and writing skills.
