Abstract

AbstractBad sleep quality is often associated with rise in blood pressure. However, there are still differences between measurement done in elderly respondents and other age categories. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine association between quality of sleep with blood pressure among elderly in Tresna Werdha nursing home city of Bandung. This study uses analytical method with cross-section design. Respondents in this study are 51 people with elderly age category. Instruments used are Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, mercury sphygmomanometer, and stethoscope. PSQI questionnaire is used to measure sleep quality with good sleep quality scores < 5, and bad sleep quality scores ≥ 5. Blood pressure with measurement result < 120 for systolic pressure and < 80 mmHg for diastolic pressure is categorized as normal blood pressure, and hypertension is categorized with measurement result ≥ 140 for systolic pressure and ≥ 90 mmHg for diastolic pressure. This study uses Chi-square analysis test with significance value p<0.05. Result of this study shows p = 0.113 for systolic pressure and p = 0.543 for diastolic pressure, it can be concluded that there is no association between sleep quality and blood pressure among elderly in Tresna Werdha nursing home city of Bandung. Keywords: sleeping quality, elderly, nursing home, blood pressure

Abstract

After a stroke, individuals have weakness and decrease mobility of the hemiparetic side, which demands less muscle oxygen consumption; thus, blood flow decrease. It interferes the hemodynamic system include vascular characteristics. The single limb (quadriceps) exercise intervention was aerobic training that focused only on the hemiparetic limb. The aims of this study was to determine the effects of the single limb exercise on vascular characteristics of both side femoral arteries using pre and post-interventional study. Twelve participants in subacute phase of stroke, performed endurance exercise using N-K table on the hemiparetic leg three times a week for eightweeks. The diameter, peak systolic velocity (PSV), total average maximal velocity (TA Max) of both side femoral arteries were measured. We found that the changing of vascular characteristics outcomes on both side femoral arteries were not statistically significant increased. Others factors that may impede vascular characteristics in both femoral arteries were blood viscosity, aging process and periods of exercise. Keywords: femoral arteries, paretic, stroke, vascular characteristics

Abstract

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by knee cartilage degradation. Knee Osteoarthritis symptoms are joint pain, stiffness, quadriceps muscle weakness and daily activities difficulties. The use of Kinesio Taping (KT) in Quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises (QSE) is known to increase quadriceps muscle strength, reduce pain and improve functional abilities in KOA. This study aimed to determine the effect of KT with QSE on quadriceps muscle strength and functional status in KOA. This is a double-blind randomized controlled trial, involving twenty-six KOA women that were divided equally into treatment and control groups. The treatment group was given KT and QSE, the control group received sham taping and QSE. Quadriceps muscle strength and WOMAC scores were measured before and after treatment at 4, 6 and 8 weeks. There was a significant difference in quadriceps muscle strength at the 6th week (p = 0.019) between treatment and control groups and no significant differences (p> 0.05) in the strength of quadriceps muscle at 4th and 8th weeks and WOMAC values ??at 4th, 6th and 8th weeks. We concluded that a combination of KT with QSE offers advantages for improvement of quadriceps muscle strength at 6th week but not for functional status in KOA. Keywords: Kinesio taping, Osteoarthritis, Strengthening exercises, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)
