Abstract

Abstract

This study addressed the low emotional-spiritual intelligence among students at SMAN 1 Kinali, a problem stemming from a conventional Islamic Religious Education (PAI) approach overly focused on cognitive and dogmatic instruction. The research aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a Sufi-oriented experiential learning model that integrates Al-Ghazali’s spiritual stages (maqamat) with Kolb’s experiential learning cycle. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) design using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), data were collected through mixed methods, including pre-test/post-test ESQ scales, participant observation, reflective journals, and in-depth interviews. The experimental group (n=32) underwent the intervention, while a control group (n=30) received conventional instruction. Quantitative data analysis using paired and independent sample t-tests revealed a significantly higher ESQ improvement in the experimental group (mean gain = +27.52, p < 0.01, d = 3.78) compared to the control group (mean gain = +10.09). Qualitative thematic analysis showed students' progression to the initial taubah (repentance) stage, marked by heightened self-awareness, behavioral changes, and value internalization. The findings conclude that the developed model is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students' ESQ. This study offers a replicable pedagogical framework for holistic PAI, emphasizing the integration of spiritual psychology and experiential pedagogy.

Abstract

Amidst the increasingly massive phenomenon of digital philanthropy, E-Sedekah emerges as a promising innovation to reach a wider range of donors and mobilize charitable funds efficiently. However, its implementation also presents significant ethical challenges, particularly concerning the concept of virtual altruism, meaning virtual kindness that is often superficial and lacks deep-rooted empathy, as well as the problem of uneven wealth distribution, which potentially widens the gap of social inequality. This research is motivated by the urgency to critically examine E-Sedekah practices from the social justice perspective of Fazlur Rahman, a prominent modernist Islamic thinker who emphasizes the contextual interpretation of the Qur'an as a foundation for addressing socio-economic disparities. The aim is not only to critique existing E-Sedekah practices but also to highlight the implications of virtual altruism on the sustainability of charity, and to identify fair and transformative distribution strategies to maximize positive impact for beneficiaries. Employing a qualitative method involving in-depth content analysis and hermeneutics of Fazlur Rahman's works, along with primary and secondary data from E-Sedekah platforms in Indonesia, the study's comprehensive results indicate that while E-Sedekah holds immense potential as a philanthropic instrument, fundamental reforms are necessary to ensure its accountability, transparency, and distribution effectiveness in accordance with Islamic principles. The recommendations include the development of a comprehensive digital ethics framework based on maqasid syariah for optimizing the role of ZISWAF in building social justice in the digital era

Abstract

The development of modern Qur’anic studies presents methodological challenges to the authority and interpretation of the Qur’an, thus requiring a scientific approach capable of integrating historical dimensions with contemporary contexts in a balanced manner. This research aims to analyze the concept of hermeneutics within Qur’anic studies and to examine its applicability through a contextual approach while maintaining the principles of Islamic epistemology. The study employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, involving a comparative analysis of the ideas of leading Qur’anic hermeneutic scholars such as Fazlur Rahman and Abdullah Saeed through primary and secondary sources. The findings indicate that hermeneutics can serve as a relevant interpretive tool in understanding modern social dynamics while enriching tafsir methodology without negating the authority of revelation. Its selective application—based on the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah) and the boundaries of definitive rulings (qat‘i)—offers contextual, humanistic, and responsive interpretations aligned with the needs of the Muslim community. In conclusion, hermeneutics can function as an alternative approach that strengthens the relevance of the Qur’an, provided that it is grounded in a solid Islamic epistemological framework and does not contradict the fundamental principles of Islamic teachings

Abstract

While religious moderation is frequently analyzed as a normative state policy or curricular content, less attention is given to the socio-epistemic mechanisms through which moderate dispositions are historically produced and embodied. This study examines the construction and reproduction of religious moderation within the Minangkabau surau–halaqah–pesantren tradition by conceptualizing halaqah as an indigenous epistemic system rather than merely a pedagogical method. Utilizing a qualitative approach framed by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis involving tuanku, ustaz, santri, and administrators across five distinct educational sites. Grounded in Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory and Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, the findings reveal that halaqah operates as a socio-epistemic mechanism integrating ta‘līm (knowledge transmission), tarbiyah (character formation), and tazkiyah (spiritual cultivation) through talaqqī, kitab kuning study, sanad continuity, and adab-based interaction. Within the Minangkabau cultural philosophy of Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (ABS–SBK), religious moderation is reproduced not as an externally imposed doctrine, but as an embodied disposition mediated by local cultural rationality and transregional Islamic intellectual networks. This study advances Islamic education and sociology of religion scholarship by demonstrating that sustainable religious moderation relies on historically rooted, institutionally embedded systems of knowledge reproduction and ethical habituation.

Abstract

This article explores the dynamics of Islamic theology by examining the conceptual development of major theological schools from the Khawarij to contemporary thought. The study seeks to illuminate their historical emergence, intellectual frameworks, and the transformation of doctrinal positions across different periods of Islamic history. Using a literature-based research method, this work analyzes classical theological texts alongside modern scholarly interpretations. The findings reveal that each theological tradition was shaped by distinctive social, political, and intellectual circumstances, resulting in diverse perspectives on human agency, divine justice, and the role of religion in public life. The discussion further demonstrates that contemporary Islamic theology increasingly adopts critical, dialogical, and human-centered approaches in response to modern challenges. Overall, the study highlights the adaptive and evolving character of Islamic theology in engaging with changing societal contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the model and achievements of zakat management during the reign of Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (717–720 AD), known as a period of socio-economic reform in Islamic history. Umar bin Abdul Aziz succeeded in establishing a transparent, fair, and effective zakat system, so that poverty was almost nonexistent in his territory. In addition, this study also examines various problems in zakat management in Indonesia and presents solutions or suggestions for zakat management in Indonesia. This study uses a historical-descriptive approach through a review of classical and contemporary literature. The results show that the success of zakat management during Umar bin Abdul Aziz's reign was due to three main factors: leadership integrity, administrative reform based on sharia, and the implementation of productive zakat distribution. Meanwhile, the main problems in zakat management today are the problem of inadequate human resources, lack of integrity in zakat management, lack of transparency and accountability, and the use of technology that is not yet optimal. The findings of Umar bin Abdul Aziz's successful zakat management are considered highly relevant as a model for zakat policy in the modern era, aimed at building a just and sustainable Islamic economy, particularly in addressing various zakat problems and managing them.

Abstract

Ijtihad, mufti, and fatwa constitute fundamental elements in the Islamic legal system that ensure the continuity and adaptability of Sharia law across changing times. In the contemporary era, the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) introduces new dynamics in Islamic legal scholarship, particularly in relation to legal reasoning and fatwa issuance. This study aims to examine the position of ijtihad, mufti, and fatwa in the age of AI and to analyze the extent to which AI can be utilized without replacing the authority of human scholars. The research employs a qualitative approach through library research, drawing on classical and contemporary works of usul al-fiqh, scholarly journal articles, and official documents from religious institutions. The findings indicate that AI lacks essential epistemological and ethical qualities required for ijtihad, such as moral responsibility, intention, and contextual understanding of social realities and maqasid al-shari‘ah. Consequently, AI cannot function as a mujtahid or mufti in determining Islamic legal rulings. Instead, it may serve as a supportive tool to assist scholars in accessing legal sources, conducting textual analysis, and managing religious data more efficiently. The study also identifies key ethical challenges related to authority, accountability, data bias, and contextual sensitivity that must be addressed to ensure responsible use of AI in Islamic law. This research contributes conceptually by clarifying the methodological boundaries of AI in Islamic legal reasoning and emphasizing the continued central role of qualified scholars in fatwa formulation.

Abstract

This paper examines the transformation of Islamic politics and civilization from the classical period to the modern era, as well as the contributions of Islam to the development of global knowledge. In the classical period, Islamic civilization was characterized by strong political institutions, intellectual openness, and the integration of religious and rational sciences, which enabled significant advancements in science, medicine, philosophy, and social thought. However, internal political fragmentation, external pressures, and colonial domination led to the decline of Islamic political power and intellectual influence. The modern period marks a phase of transformation in which Muslim societies faced the challenges of modernization, Western influence, and the reconfiguration of political and intellectual frameworks. Despite these challenges, Islam continued to contribute to global knowledge through its rich scientific heritage, methodological approaches, and ethical perspectives. The transmission of Islamic knowledge to Europe played a crucial role in shaping modern science and the Renaissance. This study highlights that the transformation from classical to modern Islamic civilization reflects both continuity and change, demonstrating the enduring relevance of Islamic intellectual traditions in the contemporary world.
