Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the significant effect of using clustering technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Culstering technique used to improve students ability in wirting especially writing descriptive text. This research was conducted at SMP Cerdas Murni Tembung Jl. Beringin Pasar VII no.33 Tembung. The method of this research is quantitative method. The total  population of this research was 91 students of the academic year 2019/2020. The researcher just took one class as the sample. The sample consisted of 30 students from VIII-1 class and choosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The writer divided the class into two groups, that are experimental group and non-experimental group. The experimental  group was taught by using cluster technique. The  data for this research taken from pre-test and post-test of  the written test. The experimental group was given pre-test and post-test.  After the data has been collected, these were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that tobserve (5.215) was higher than ttable (1.701) with the level of significant α = 0.05. The final hypothesis showed that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It means that there was a significant effect of using clustering technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The awareness of using standardized structures and rule in using English  especially in speaking is very important for the students who learn English as a second language besides their mother tongue. This study is aimed to find out the types of students’ grammatical errors in speaking English in English Department in UINSU. Qualitative method used in this research. The source of the data  is the documentation from recorded file of interview foreigners from the students who studied in English Department in UINSU. The total number of students is ten students. Then, this data collected and analyzed based on the theory of Two Dulay (1982). From he data collection, it was found that there are five types of grammatical errors in their speaking such as omission, misformation, misordering, over-regulation, and addition. The highest percentage for these errors was addition 29.5 % followed by misformation 25 %, omission 18.1 %, over-generalization 15.9 % .respectively and the lowest one was misordering 11.3 % .To be the causes of these errors were intralingual and interlingual factors.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the types of adjuncts and the dominant types of circumstantial adjunct that found in Jakarta Post headlines News  because it expresses the meaning through sentences. This qualitative descriptive research used library research and documentation method. The data in Jakarta Post headline news dated 5th January 2021 from the two articles entitled “Israel is the fastest in the Covid-19 vaccination program, PM Netanyahu estimates the country is pandemic free in February “ and “Japan’s indigenious people, the Ainu, were the earliest settlers of Hokkaido, Japan’s Northern island be the sources of data. There are 202 circumstantial adjuncts found in these headline news. Then, the data selected based on the topic discussion by identifying and making a list from those sentences in the headlines news. After that, data were analyzed by using Halliday’s theory and then classified these adjuncts and calculated the percentage of the adjunct’s occurrences. Through this study, it was discovered that there were eight circumstantial  types of adjuncts used in this headlines news such as location, extent, role, manner, accompaniment, cause, matter and angle but there is no circumstantial adjuncts of contingency in these articles. Besides, it was also found that location adjunct became the most dominant adjuncts with the percentage 42.57 %.
