Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing speech and thought presentation in the story by means of stylistic approach proposed by Leech and Short (2007). There are two main objectives in this research: (1) to find out speech and thought presentation techniques used in the story and (2) to figure out how those techniques reveal the characterization of the story. Three types of speech presentation were found in the analysis: Free Direct Speech (FDS) in 56%, Direct Speech (DS) in 41%, and Indirect Speech (IS) in 3%. Indirect Thought (IT) is the only thought presentation found in the data, presented in 15 utterances. Those presentation techniques reveal that Lahiri lets the readers involved in the story. FDS shows that the absence of the narrator in the dialogues is influenced by clarity of the context. By employing IT in the whole thought presentation, Lahiri involves herself in the character’s consciousness. Keywords: speech, thought, presentation, stylistics

Abstract

Tourism is an important topic to observe since it affects a country’s economic vibrancy and global image. Scholars have researched the tourism website's lexical and visual features, yet none observed how the website builds an interpersonal relationship to the browsers. Thus, this paper sheds light on how Indonesian tourism website exchanges information, goods, and services to the browsers. Two problems are addressed in this paper: (1) how are the mood structures employed on the Indonesian tourism website? (2) what are tourism discourses revealed on the web? To answer them, ten sample articles of Medan, Raja Ampat, Bali, Banyuwangi, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Makassar, Lombok, and Wakatobi highlighted on the front page of the website, accessed on www.indonesia.travel, were analyzed through Discourse Analysis approach. The 461 collected clauses were categorized into the mood structures and their speech functions. The results showed that the website was dominated by declarative mood functioning as statements, seen in 328 clauses, or 71.6% of the total clauses. It implied that promotion was not thoroughly involved, proven by the limited number of the speech function “offer”. The website's mood structures aimed to present itineraries and access, a place to play, and authenticity. Aside from culinary and cultural heritage, the website also presented traditional transportation and game as Indonesian authenticity. The commodity given on the website was in the form of information to help the prospective tourists prepare for their trip to Indonesia.

The Stylistic analysis aimed at comprehending the meanings of either literary or non-literary text by means of observing the language device used in the texts. In this article, the stylistic analysis was conducted to analyze Maya Angelou’s Equality. To achieve the goal of stylistic analysis, there were some language levels to observe; they were phonological, graphological, grammatical, and semantic levels. In the phonological level, the repetition of rhyme in some stanzas, assonance, consonance, and alliteration were used to voice Angelou’s dream about freedom for black people. In the graphological level, the use of prominent punctuation in stanzas 3, 6, and 9 stressed equality as the requirement for the freedom she expected. In the grammatical level, Angelou used pronoun I and you as the dominant words in the poem, revealed different class the poet experienced in the country. The use of metaphors in the poem brought the same meaning as freedom, voice, effort, and racism that black people experienced in America. This research concludes that stylistics applies to analyze literary work so that thorough appreciation to it can be achieved.

Abstract

Firth dan M.A.K. Halliday.

Abstract

Cohesion plays an important role in building the readability and comprehension of a text. Instead of lexical, reference, substitution, and reference, the conjunction is also important in a text. One of which is “thus” which shows how the message is packaged in the text. Journal articles become the major source for scholars to share and connect their ideas. The ‘standard’ writing including content and format is one of the concerns in the article publication. The employment of conjunction in the article is important to show the author’s logical connection between her or his ideas. By employing discourse analysis by Halliday and Hassan, this paper aims at finding out the cohesion of journal articles of applied linguistics seen from the employment of conjunction “thus” adopting Martin and Rose’s theory on a logical connection. Purposive sampling method was conducted by taking forty journal articles on applied linguistics. AntConc, a corpus web, was employed to help the researches figure out how conjunction “thus” is used in the text in building the cohesion of the data.

Abstract

In tourism promotion, nature has been considered a key factor in persuading tourists to visit. Nature has been studied by many researchers using linguistic analysis,  such as metaphor and rhetorical devices, to attach it to beauty and paradise. However, tourism promotion in social media now also requires multimodal modes to communicate with readers. The choice of shot strategies, frame size, and eye level in the visual source are powerful features to position readers in virtual communication. Therefore, this paper addresses multimodal strategies to present Indonesian nature in the tourism website from its interpersonal strategies. Theories of multimodality by Kress and Leeuwen are applied to discuss five samples of the multimodal resources of Medan, Raja Ampat, Lombok, Bintan, and Banyuwangi. The analysis found that the visual strategies identified from the gaze, shot distance, and eye level constitute an offer, while the textual strategies function as informative and descriptive. This paper confirms previous research that Indonesian tourism website is loaded with descriptive modes where persuasion is indirectly addressed.
