Abstract

Scholars have observed hedges in academic writing, yet the examination of hedges in students’ reflective feedback is scarcely found. During the Covid-19 pandemic, both teachers and students face difficulty engaging themselves in online classes. To figure out how students show their attitude, among others, is through reflective feedback. One of the language features pivotal in reflective feedback is ‘hedge’, a pragmatic feature representing a speaker’s tentativeness and possibility in communication (Lakoff, 1973). This paper addresses two questions: (1) what types of hedges are used in the students’ reflective feedback in online class during the covid-19 outbreak? and (2) what are the functions of the hedges? This paper took 151 samples of students’ reflective feedback in the introduction to English linguistics class at Sanata Dharma University to answer those problems. Findings reveal that the students dominantly used modal auxiliaries and epistemic adverbs as the types of hedges as a politeness technique to convey their anxiety and hesitation during an online class. Keywords: hedges, reflective feedback, online class

Abstract

In tourism promotion, nature has been considered a key factor in persuading tourists to visit. Nature has been studied by many researchers using linguistic analysis,  such as metaphor and rhetorical devices, to attach it to beauty and paradise. However, tourism promotion in social media now also requires multimodal modes to communicate with readers. The choice of shot strategies, frame size, and eye level in the visual source are powerful features to position readers in virtual communication. Therefore, this paper addresses multimodal strategies to present Indonesian nature in the tourism website from its interpersonal strategies. Theories of multimodality by Kress and Leeuwen are applied to discuss five samples of the multimodal resources of Medan, Raja Ampat, Lombok, Bintan, and Banyuwangi. The analysis found that the visual strategies identified from the gaze, shot distance, and eye level constitute an offer, while the textual strategies function as informative and descriptive. This paper confirms previous research that Indonesian tourism website is loaded with descriptive modes where persuasion is indirectly addressed.

Abstract

Emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT offer considerable promise for enhancing professional development in higher education. This study focuses on the experiences of early-career lecturers who utilise ChatGPT for professional development. Central questions explore ChatGPT's influence on their overall professional experience and the challenges and benefits of its use. While research on AI in education has been growing, few studies have delved into the specific experiences of young academics using ChatGPT. This study employed qualitative methods to address this gap, pre-cisely 45- to 60-minute in-depth interviews with two purposively selected lecturers, followed by a thematic analysis using a grounded theory approach. Our findings reveal a multifaceted landscape: on the one hand, ChatGPT enhances the ability to construct intricate academic arguments, increases effi-ciency in research and teaching tasks, and heightens critical thinking capabilities. Conversely, chal-lenges such as initial technical hurdles, occasional incorrect outputs, and concerns about over-dependency were also highlighted. Through this investigation, the study contributes to the broader discourse on AI in education by illustrating both the promising opportunities and potential pitfalls of using ChatGPT in academia. The study underscores the need for a balanced approach to AI adoption. It offers insights into the role of AI tools like ChatGPT in shaping the future of professional development in higher education.

Abstract

The societal phenomenon of taboo terms is commonly expressed in song lyrics. This research focuses on the function of taboo expressions in the song lyrics of Nicki Minaj, a singer who is known to use such expressions. The first objective of this analysis is to determine the types of taboo expressions found in Minaj’s songs. Secondly, the researchers examine the function of these expressions in the song lyrics. Four of Minaj's songs are presented in the data: "Superbass," "Megatron," "Barbie Tingz," and "Anaconda." This research employs descriptive and qualitative analysis, as well as the theoretical frameworks provided by Battistella (2005) and Wardhaugh (2021). The findings demonstrate that vulgarity is the most frequent form of taboo expression in Minaj's song lyrics, while the main function of these phrases is to attract attention. These songs indicate more than simply linguistic qualities; they also offer a thorough understanding of the social setting. This study fills a gap in the literature on taboo expressions in song lyrics by revealing the function and types of taboo expressions employed by a well-known singer. This research has the capacity to enlighten future research on the usage of taboo expressions in music, and the broader cultural consequences of such language implication.

Abstract

The community service program aimed at raising environmental awareness among the youth at St. Angela Sedayu Girls' Dormitory was conducted through three main phases: initial observation, outreach, and evaluation. The outreach provided education on environmental management, energy conservation, as well as the concepts of sustainable food consumption and slow fashion. This approach was supported by the moral and spiritual values from the encyclical Laudato Si', which emphasizes the importance of caring for the earth as our "common home."The results of the outreach demonstrated an increase in understanding and behavioral changes among the youth regarding waste sorting, reduced plastic consumption, and energy conservation. Additionally, the youth began adopting sustainable food consumption practices and decreasing their reliance on fast fashion. Although the program did not include long-term monitoring, the observed behavioral changes indicate potential sustainability if supported by appropriate management strategies. As a recommendation, the dormitory could implement a more effective waste sorting system, promote energy conservation, encourage local food consumption, and support slow fashion through creative programs. With a sustainable approach, the dormitory is expected to continue fostering an environmentally friendly culture among the youth.
