Finding Ways to Attract Clients: A Content Analysis of Japanese Language Tutors’ Ads in an Online Tutor Marketplace Aditya Nur Patria

Abstract

The growing number of freelance marketplaces allows students to earn extra money as tutors. The hyper-competitive nature in the marketplaces forces students to compete with non-student tutors in order to get clients (Popiel, 2017). Non-student tutors may be better equipped with a lot of experiences. However, all freelance tutors need to post impressive ads to get their clients, particularly in a niche subject such as Japanese language. The present study explores the differences of information put in ads between student tutors and non-student tutors on a tutor marketplace, Superprof. Content analysis (Cohen et al, 2011) was used to identify categories of information in the ads. The results show that there were 11 categories of information including tutors’ name, origin, current employment status, education background, language proficiency certificate, course level, course type, rhetoric, experience in Japan, coverage area, and availability. The data were then analyzed statistically to find the categories of information with a significant difference. It shows that both groups have difference in putting information related to their current employment status (t = 3.88, p < 0.001, d = 1.05) and their education background (t = 2.78, p < 0.005, d = 0.75). The implication of the study is that student tutors tend to value their relationship with academic institutions and make it as a bargaining power to market their skills in the marketplace.

Abstract

ABSTRAKTulisan ini melaporkan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat berupa pembuatan video animasi storytelling. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk menambah bahan ajar bahasa Inggris yang menarik dan relevan untuk pelajar anak-anak, yaitu tingkat Kelompok Belajar (KB) hingga Sekolah Dasar (SD). Sehingga diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa asing pemelajar anak. Video animasi dianggap bisa memberikan pengalaman belajar yang baik kepada para pemelajar bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pengucapan kata (pronunciation) dan perbendaharaan kata (vocabulary). Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini melibatkan karya proyek yang dibuat mahasiswa mata kuliah Prononsiasi Bahasa Inggris di program studi Bahasa Asing Terapan, Universitas Diponegoro. Mitra kegiatan pengabdian ini (guru sekolah) merasa puas dengan video animasi yang diberikan. Namun, ada beberapa catatan untuk meningkatkan mutu video ke depannya. Kegiatan pengabdian ini tidak hanya memberi manfaat kepada para mitra pengabdian tetapi juga memberdayakan mahasiswa untuk turut serta berkontribusi kepada masyarakat.Keywords: video, pembelajaran bahasa, bahasa Inggris, pengucapan, perbendaharaan kataABSTRACTThis report discusses community service activity of creating storytelling animated videos. The aim of this activity is to add to English language learning materials which are attractive and relevant to young learners, i.e. play group (PG) to primary school (PS) students. It is expected that the videos can enhance their foreign language skills. Animated videos are considered capable of providing English language learners with a unique learning experience to enhance their abilities in pronunciation and vocabulary. This activity utilizes the project works from students of English Pronunciation course at Applied Foreign Languages Program of Universitas Diponegoro. The partner of this activity (i.e. school teachers) are satisfied with the videos. However, there are some notes to improve the quality of similar videos in the future. This activity does not only benefit the partners but also empowers the students to contribute to the community.Keywords: video, language learning, English language, pronunciation, vocabulary

Abstract

Tulisan ini melaporkan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat pelatihan pembahasan soal reading comprehension melalui webinar. Kegiatan ini secara umum ditujukan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan memahami teks berbahasa Inggris. Secara khusus, kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk membantu para calon peserta UTBK SBMPTN dalam mengerjakan soal terkait reading comprehension. Kegiatan pengabdian yang diinisiasi para dosen prodi Bahasa Asing Terapan ini melibatkan beberapa mahasiswa sebagai pembicara. Kegiatan ini diadakan melalui platform Zoom dan dihadiri 44 peserta.Keywords:  Pembelajaran Virtual, Pemahaman Membaca, Bahasa Inggris, Tes Bahasa This report recounts community service activity of discussing strategies on how to do English reading comprehension test. In general, the aim of this activity is to improve learners’ reading comprehension skill. This activity is specifically conducted to facilitate prospective UTBK SBMPTN test takers in completing the reading comprehension section of the test. The community service activity initiated by lecturers of Applied Foreign Languages study program involved their students as the speakers in the event. Abstract

Bagi siswa kelas 12 SMA/SMK/MA atau lulusan tahun 2020 dan 2021 yang ingin melanjutkan studi ke Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (PTN), maka dapat mendaftar melalui jalur UTBK SBMPTN 2022. Melansir laman Lembaga Tes Masuk Perguruan Tinggi (LTMPT), SBMPTN adalah kepanjangan dari Seleksi Bersama Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri yang sejak tahun 2019 SBMPTN menggunakan hasil UTBK dan/atau kriteria lain ditetapkan bersama oleh PTN. Salah satu tujuan pemerintah menyelenggarakan SBMPTN ini adalah untuk menyeleksi calon mahasiswa yang diprediksi mampu menyelesaikan studi di perguruan tinggi dengan baik dan tepat waktu berdasarkan hasil UTBK dan atau kriteria lain yang ditetapkan bersama oleh PTN, PTKIN dan Politeknik Negeri. Tes Kemampuan Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu tahap tes untuk mengukur kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang diperlukan untuk mendukung pembelajaran di perguruan tinggi. Materi tes yang diujikan dalam tes bahasa Inggris adalah Tata Bahasa Inggris. Tata bahasa juga menjadi momok bagi pembelajar bahasa Inggris di Indonesia, oleh karena itu diperlukan pelatihan tata bahasa Inggris bagi para calon mahasiswa. Pelatihan tata bahasa Inggris dilakukan pada tanggal 13 Mei 2022 mulai pukul 08.00 – 15.00 dengan menggunakan zoom. Pelatihan ini mendapatkan respon positif dari peserta dengan tingginya antusiasme serta tingginya jumlah peserta dalam mengikuti kegiatan.Kata Kunci: Tata Bahasa Inggris, Pelatihan, UTBK SBMPTNThe third-year Senior High School students as well as the one who graduates in 2020 and 2021 can continue their studies at State Universities (PTN) by passing UTBK SBMPTN 2022.  The SBMPTN stands for the Joint Selection for State University Entrance, and since 2019 it has used the UTBK and/or other criteria determined jointly by the PTN. The purpose of the SBMPTN is to select prospective students who can complete their studies in higher education well and on time based on the results of the UTBK and or other criteria set jointly by PTN, PTKIN, and State Polytechnic. The English Proficiency Test includes the UTBK to measure the English language skills needed to support learning in higher education. English Grammar is one of the parts of the test it became a scourge for English language learners in Indonesia. Therefore English grammar training is needed for prospective students. English grammar training held on May 13, 2022, starting at 08.00 – 15.00 using zoom. This training received a positive response from the participants with high enthusiasm and a high number of participants participating in the activities.Keywords: English Grammar, Training, UTBK SBMPTN
