Abstract

The history of civilization has its own uniqueness. There is an era in which all forms of knowledge must be memorized. However, after the advent of the printing press, many books circulated that could be a source of knowledge. And after this post-modern era arrives, all knowledge is available at hand via smart-phone at any time.According to historical records, education in the Jewish tradition is very strict. From an early age, a human child has been accustomed to remember what has been learned as part of life. There are four records in history to understand the practice of learning in understanding God's Law carefully and memorizing it. These sources from different eras testify simultaneously that memorization is a must for Jewish education context both at home, public school and synagogue. The sectarian, in Qumran, maintained their own strict interpretation of the Law. Family was still the chief institution and primary context for the dispensation of elementary instruction; although the scribes, Pharisees and learned rabbis played a major role in Jewish education during the NT era. Talmud is more specific about the age of studying and the sign of mastering. Origen also was trained since his childhood by his father, Leonides, to memorize Scripture daily and recite them every day.

Abstract

There are many discussions, OT exposition and Hebrew exegesis about marriage based on Genesis 2:21-24. It is interesting, however, to analyze how Latin Vulgate interprets and translates Genesis 2:21-24. Latin Vulgate seems to follow the word order of the Hebrew Bible and employ the literal translation of the Hebrew Bible. Although the translator uses the literal translation, he still has the freedom in his translation to accomplish his specific purposes such as the usage of ergo, cumque, replevit, virago and other words that will be discussed in this article. This research will be interpreted from the theme of unity, both man and woman.

Abstract

Since Indonesia is also one of the most diverse societies in the world such as there are over three hundred different ethnic groups in Indonesia, each with its own cultural identity, and more than two hundred and fifty distinct languages are spoken, then Pancasila is created as philosophic fundamentals of the state to supports the diversity in Indonesia. Pancasila (from a Sankrit word: panca: five and sila: principle) consists of five principles that are interrelated and inseparable to generate unity in diversity (bhinnekatunggalika). In this paper, I will argue that Pancasila promotesand facilitates religious diversity although religious culture in Indonesia does not promote religious pluralism.
A Textual Criticism and Lexical Analysis of Isaiah 62 Philip Suciadi Chia; Juanda Juanda

Abstract

This research presents a methodology and example of doing both a textual criticism and a word study or a lexical analysis of the Hebrew word. The textual external evidence strongly favors the consonantal text of reading one because all the ancient versions support it. The internal evidence, though it is not as strong as external evidence, has endorsements from its context and appearances of that word in Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah 62:1, the best understanding of יד ִּפַל is not from literal sense but rather symbolic. The context of the usage of this term is God will restore Zion, particularly in her salvation, which is symbolized as a torch that burns. It means that Yahweh will make glorious Zion’s deliverance like a torch so that all nations, including their kings, will be witnesses of Zion’s restoration.
Understanding The Relationship Between Faith and Knowledge Philip Suciadi Chia; Juanda Juanda

Abstract

The issue of the relationship between faith and knowledge is very interesting to be studied from the contemporary times. Each period of life is unique in understanding the issues of faith and knowledge. Likewise, John Hick's opinion in his book ‘Faith and Knowledge’ is very interesting to be researched. In this brief paper, the writer limits the definitions analysis to Oxford Dictionary and John Hick. Then, the writer will evaluate those definitions to clarify the relationship between faith and knowledge. The understanding that opposes faith and knowledge will cause confusion when talking about the issue of them.Is there a gap between faith and knowledge? We would say that there is no gap between them. We admit, however, that there is a sequence or an order between them. First, it begins with the revelation of God that produces passive faith to us. Through various circumstances, experiences and education, we as human being will embrace the process of getting knowledge about reality and God’s revelation.

Abstract

In the Zechariah, there are various visions and prophecies that are so difficult to be understood today. And this can be biased if every Bible’s learner interprets it as he pleases. In this research, which uses the Lexical Analysis approach, will discuss about the meaning of the words בָּרֹד and מֵֽהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב of In Zechariah 6:3-5. With in-depth observation and also making language comparisons, it can be concluded that: בָּרֹדin Zechariah 6:3 should be translated as dappled, a literal or concrete definition. Old Testament does not give any specific color with regard to the dappled. However, it seems that the color of horses in Zechariah 6:1-8 has a function to distinguish one chariot from the other chariots. יצבin Zechariah 6:5 should be interpreted in the sense of readiness to serve God, a metaphorical extension of the concrete definition, ‘to stand’. The four spirits are going forth after serving the Lord of all the earth in the heavens. It implies that the four spirits are belonged to God. In the heavens, they are serving God and when going to the earth, they carry God’s mission.
Does Malachi 1:2-3 Teach Double Predestination? Philip Suciadi Chia; Juanda Juanda

Abstract

The term ‘double predestination’ simply means that, just as God predestines some, but not all, to eternal salvation, so he predestines others to eternal punishment; this second part of ‘double predestination’, God's appointment of all but the elect unto eternal destruction, is sometimes called ‘reprobation’; and those who are not the elect are thus called the ‘reprobate’.The object of Malachi was in reminding the Jews that they were loved and chosen by God; it was, that he might the more amplify their ingratitude for having rendered such an unworthy reward for so great a favor of God: as he had preferred them to all other nations, he had justly bound them to perpetual obedience. With the inductive method, we will present a more objective truth of Scripture. We will not only explain the truth of the Bible would conclude (correct interpretation), but also accompanied by the evidence and arguments of the conclusions. In conclusion, the meaning of hate in this context is God hated Esau, the absence of affection, because he is a sinful people therefore Yahweh opposed and kept distant from him (have no relationship). Based on this meaning, we can summarize that this verse (Mal. 1:3) doesn’t teach about reprobation that God has predestined Esau to go to eternal destruction because Yahweh hated him beforehand but Lord indeed hated Edomites because they are sinful people.

Abstract

Every age, God will raise up certain people who will become church leaders in their day, to be witnesses of God through the truth of God's word. Their presence did not only appear suddenly, but also through a long process of life and education. In this article, we will explore about The Background of Calvin’s Thoughts, whose influence has revealed the world of theology to this day. Calvin was not only influenced by France Humanism but also medieval Theology at that time. Voluntarism was a popular theology in Calvin era. Calvin received only education in theology from medieval tradition on the first stage of his studies because he never studied theology at university. Calvin’s method which was used to build his theology is inseparable from his studying in Civil Law in Orleans. His studying in Orleans has changed Calvin to be a good jurist and he used his skill later in Geneva to compile codifications of legislation and regulation for Church and government in Geneva. In addition to regulation of life, Calvin also noticed the purity of Christian faith teaching.

Abstract

The Bible is the word of God that needs to be understood by all those who already have Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. This is called a Christian. It is different from people who are Christians as a 'religion'. Christians are obliged to study the Bible as a basic truth in order to know God's will from time to time. On the other hand, Bible learners often experience confusion problems, when understanding the continuity of the contents from Genesis to Revelation. Are there interrelations? Or it is just a fragmented story with different intentions. There are appropriate methods in avoiding confusion when doing this learning process. This method has been understood since the beginning of the century which then became popular throughout the world in the 19th century, with the term Dispensationalism.Dispensation is a period of time during which humans are tested in the perspective of obedience to a specific revelation of God's will. Theologically, the word dispensation means a religious system that is understood as a divine provision or as a sign of progressive revelation that expresses the changing needs of an individual nation or time period. Dispensationalism views the world as a household run or worked by God.Dispensation theology is often misunderstood by theologians, without wanting to study it carefully, where is the oddity? This discussion will show that Dispensationalism is as a sharp knife for understanding the Bible as a whole.

Abstract

There are various choices in understanding the Bible to become dogma in a church. Whether it was built based on a guide from the Bible and the traditions of the apostles or church fathers, to those who only focus on the Bible. Those based only on the Bible also have their own uniqueness. Amillennialism believes that the church is in the entire Old Testament. Paul, for example, uses the church that leads to Israel (Gal. 6:16). In addition, the remnants of the Israelites in the OT were said to be the church (Acts 7:38). The church is already in the OT with the election of the nation of Israel to be God's people. Even further, followers of amillennialism believe that the church existed in the garden of Eden. Covenant theology bases its theological understanding and the study of the Bible is based on three covenants namely the work agreement, redemption and grace. Covenant theology can be said to be a new theology, not even in the days of the church fathers. Even so, Augustine did mention the relationship of Adam, who at first, stood before God as a covenant. The exposition of the book of Revelation, according to the Covenant Theologian, is based on the method of progressive parallelism which is divided into seven parts. The seven parts are parallel with each other. Each section also reveals a certain progression in the process of eschatology. Although the book of Revelation is divided into seven parts, it should not only pay attention or focus on one part, but should appreciate all parts of the book of Revelation as a whole.
