Abstract

This research aims to find the use of code-switching to show empathy. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to identify the types of code-switching used in Breakout Music Program on NET TV and 2) to describe how code-switching shows empathy in Breakout Music Program on NET TV. The theories used in this study are; the types of code-switching by Romaine to answer the research question number one, and the reason to do code-switching by Hoffman to answer the research question number two. Based on the result of this research, the researcher found that all types of code-switching proposed by Romaine are found in Breakout music program. Furthermore, all seven reasons in using code-switching are also found in Breakout music program, however the most dominant reason for doing code-switching is to show empathy and the least dominant reason is to quote somebody else.

Abstract

This thesis explores the feudalist symbols towards behavior in the novel The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to identify the forms of the feudalist symbols found in the novel The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor and 2) to identify how the feudalist symbols influence the behavior found in the novel The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor. The theory used in this research is the semiotic using Roland Barthes theory of feudalist symbols; the methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. As for the data, they were collected from the words and sentences in the novel. The words and sentences in the novel were taken out as the primary data. The result of the research, the researcher finds that are eight forms of the feudalist symbols in The Girl Who Came Home by Hazel Gaynor, the forms are: 1) Want to always be respected 2) Limiting the association 3) The title of education 4) Dressing excessive 5) Showing off the wealth 6) The using of language 7) Limiting the unnecessary time 8) Disrespecting others. The researcher also finds the feudalist symbols influence the behavior, those are; Desperate, Arrogant and Selfish.

Abstract

This research explores two objectives; 1) to identify the types of address terms found in Deadpool Max volume 1 comic. 2) to describe the taboo words used as mockery terms in Deadpool Max volume 1 comic. The theory used in this research is the sociolinguistics analysis using Wardhaugh’s theory. The methodology employed is qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. The data were in the form of utterances, while the dialogue uttered from Deadpool Max volume 1 comic was the primary data source. Then various journal, books and internet to support the data analysis were the secondary data source. The results of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, seven types of address terms are found in the comic. 78 total data appear, there are, First Name (FN), Title Alone (T), Title plus Last Name (TLN), Special Nick Name (SN), Pet Name (PN), Kinship Terms (KT), and Mockery Terms (MT). Secondly, the taboo words used as mockery terms are found, and there are 2 reasons of using taboo words; to show anger and to mock.

Abstract

There are two objectives of this research; to identify the types of deixis used in the utterances in the novel The Kite Runner; and to explain the references of using deixis found in the novel. The method used in this research is the qualitative descriptive method because the data were analyzed in the form of words and utterances. The theory used in this research is the Deixis theory by Stephen C. Levinson’s, also supported by the theory of references by Yule. The result of this research shows that there are five types of deixis found in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, those are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The references of using deixis found anaphora and cataphora. Based on the data deixis that has been found and analyzed by the researcher in this research, person deixis is more dominant used in the novel, and for the use of references, anaphora reference is more dominant used than cataphora reference in the novel The Kite Runner.

Abstract

This research focuses on the anxiety of Alice Howland in the novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova. There are two objectives of this research; 1) to find out the kinds of anxiety on Alice Howland in the novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova and 2) to explain the condition of Anxiety trigger the repressive Actions to Alice Howland in the Novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova. In this research the researcher used the theory is Psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud that talk about Anxiety and Defend Mechanism; the methodology employed is qualitative and the researcher present the issues descriptively and using the data collected from the novel were taken out as the primary data. The result the research was found the kinds of anxiety that occurred in Alice Howland namely hormonal anxiety, social anxiety and attack anxiety which could trigger repressive actions in Alice Howland and the researcher found several repressive actions in Still Alice's novel, namely repetition, moral felling and composing self.

Abstract

The focuses of this research are to find out the forms of taboo words in the novel Peepshow and to explain how the expression through taboo words revealed in the novel Peepshow. The theory used in this research is Batistella’s theory of taboo words and expression theory according to Ekman’s theory of expression. The methodology employed is descriptive qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. As for the data, they were collected from the excerpt of the novel’s quotation. The researcher finds that the forms of taboo words in the novel Peepshow is Obscenity divided into. The use of impolite words in Body excretion and the use of impolite words in sexual function, Vulgarity divided into. The use of the impolite words in body anatomy and the use of the impolite words in sexual function. Profanity in the use of impolite words in religious cursing, and. The epithet in the use of impolite words by people’s status. While the researcher founds the revealing expression through the taboo words consisted of sad, angry, fear, happy, surprise, and disgust expression through obscenity, vulgarity, profanity, and epithet expression.

Abstract

This research aims to find the types of speech acts and to explain how the effect toward behavior of main character in Real Steel movie. The researcher uses speech act theory by Austin and Searle to discuss the type and effect toward behavior of the main character in the movie. The method used in this research is qualitative method that explained descriptively. Qualitative research is a research conducted with the source of data that comes in form of writing and descriptive means that the researcher would describe the collected data descriptively throughout the thesis. The results found the types of speech acts namely locution, illocution, and perlocution. locution consists of five classifications, Illocution itself consists of five types, namely assertive, descriptive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. While perlocution itself consists of twelve types, but the researcher only found five types contained in the dialogue to convince the listener, scare the listener, to remind the listener, to make the listener do something, and to make the listener aware of something. As for the effect on behavior, the researcher concludes in two parts, namely whether includes in a positive effect or negative effect on the behavior of the speaker or speech partner.

Abstract

The research discusses deictic expressions or deixis in Nasreddin’s selected stories. The research method applied in the research is qualitative research while the theory that is used in the research is the theory of deixis by Yule that is used to analyze the deictic expressions in the story book. The researcher uses qualitative research because the data of this research are limited to the words or phrases having deictic expressions in the book of Nasreddin, A Man with Thousands Ideas. The aims of this research are to identify the type of deixis and explain the references that appear in the book. The result shows that there are three types of deixis that appear in the book. The analysis also shows that anaphoric and cataphoric references are found in the story book.

Abstract

English teachers should be smart in choosing a right method to be used in their teaching and learning. In the case of choosing any technique, method, model, and strategy is such a main priority before coming to class. The fallacy of choosing method in teaching can be a contradiction to the instructional objectives. The theoretical analysis tries to re-unlock any new perspective by using direct method in conducting English teaching and learning process. The way of interpretation and manipulation of method appropriately not only can enhance the quality of teaching and learning process but also leaning outcome or students’ achievement. Using direct method in teaching English is not only in spoken aspect but also in written one especially in teaching language skills, such as speaking, and grammar aspect. Applying direct method in teaching and learning English should pay attention to the students and the characteristics of the materials that will be taught. To teach and learn English as a foreign language and target language is good for the teachers or learners use the direct method.

Abstract
