Abstract

The authors conducted a study related to using English in learning mathematics, for grade 7 junior high school students in a private national plus school. The purpose of this study was for the reader to open up further insights related to the topic. This study was carried out with experimental design, by doing different treatment between classes in the same level. The subjects of the study consisted of 63 students spread into three classes; 7A, 7B, and 7C. Class 7C was a control group, using Bahasa Indonesia (mother tongue) in learning Mathematics. Class 7A and 7B were the experimental groups, where 7A was in English and 7B used bilingual (English and Indonesian). Results of the study include the following; using English is not detrimental to the students in mark achievement that is shown by the average of the final mark of Mathematics that is not significantly different. The challenges that arise from learning Mathematics need to be reviewed from the process, readiness, independence, motivation of students and needs to be followed up critically so that students can achieve better results. Short and long-term programs need to be created and observed in order to support the learning process of Mathematics for students, such as training teachers to be able to teach mathematics in English, in supporting action study by teachers, managed by the school.

Abstract

One of the most discussed issues currently is the competition of people among nations. Cross-cultural communication is becoming more and more apparent in countries in various aspects of life. This study aimed to provide an overview of how branding on Indonesia could be done through cross-cultural communication. The study examined cross-cultural communication between lecturers of Bina Nusantara University (Binus University) in Indonesia and lecturers from the Appalachian State University (ASU) the United States, as part of their research into Asian countries. The American lecturers interacted with lecturers from Binus University, Jakarta, as well as with the community in several regions of Indonesia. The study used a qualitative approach with descriptive method. This research was a case study with open interviews and observation of data collection techniques. The results showed that the interaction between Indonesian and American lecturers had built positive branding for Indonesia as reflected in posts on the American lecturers’ social media accounts which they did on their initiative after they visited Indonesia.

Abstract

This research described about how Cross-Cultural Communication contributes its influence on accommodating the generation gap to improve a social structure in Indonesia, especially on Disruptive Era. In accommodating the generation gap, the cross-cultural communication focus on the patterns of convergence and divergence of communication behaviors, particularly as they relate to the goals of the people for social approval, communication efficiency, and identity. This research was done in Bina Nusantara (BINUS) University, and used a descriptive qualitative method with constructivism paradigm, and coding to analyze the data. The results showed that accommodation in cross-cultural communication can improved the ability on problem-solving skills, collective decisions and can resolved the problem that arise from generation gap to make it become harmonious interactions. The lack of the role in providing information from generation to another generation usually based on the assumption that the other generation already knew the condition, situation and also the meaning behind it as well without any discussion and deeper communication further. Due to the changes in social structure, BINUS creating a cross cultural communication model to accommodate the generation gap in social structure: openness, and engagement, through (for example) creative furniture arrangemement in some classes. The result also shown that engagement between the students and the lecturer will be more powerful in creating values to have a better social condition. The people who willing to build the communication instead of assumed will be more successful in all aspects of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to identify and map the school principals’ competence in English-speaking schools setting, according to the Decree of Ministry of Education no 13/2007 regarding competence standard for school principals and in implementing school-based management (SBM). The research applied a qualitative descriptive method, although the data were processed in a quantitative way. The data were gathered through structured questionnaires collected from ten principals and 74 teachers from ten schools. Data validation was conducted through interviews with ten school principals, two teachers per school, and the board’s representatives. The result of the research is the recommendations of the school principals’ competence development program as an alternative solution for the schools. The result shows that the school principals’ competencies have met the government standard competence. In the implementation of SBM, the school principals need to improve their five dimensions of principal competence (personal, managerial, entrepreneurship, supervision, and social). Especially the essence of SBM through training programs are principals’ roles and responsibilities, developing school profiles, school visioning, financial and school facilities management, strategic planning, school as a learning community, academic supervision, monitoring and evaluation, school marketing and branding, and nontraining programs.

Abstract

There are many creative opportunities for Internet of Things (IoT) systems to positively impact schools, industries, and others. The purpose of this study is to describe how negative issues in vocational schools (SMK) can be overturned with the ability of SMK students in the field of IoT. Researchers used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The results show that vocational schools in Indonesia prepared students to face the world of work supporting IoT learning such as curriculum synchronization, laboratories, and production units. Optimism that IoT will be the flagship of vocational school because the SMK has competent human resources in IoT technology and has been certified. A vocational school is producing the IoT smart lock RFID system products. The conclusion is although the IoT system is still straightforward, which is made in the form of a smart lock system, it can represent technology products made by vocational students. This can be a school branding for prospective students or their parents.
