Abstract

I once was lost, but now am found”.

Abstract

Self-confidence is an individual’s belief in their ability to perform a task. Self-confidence will affect an individual’s performance. Clinical improvisation is one of the most essential yet complex techniques in music therapy. The music therapist’s self-confidence in facilitating clinical improvisation will affect the therapeutic relationship and outcome during sessions. However, the factors that may affect the music therapist’s self-confidence in facilitating clinical improvisation remain unknown. According to Bandura (1997), there are four factors that may affect an individual’s self-confidence: mastery experience, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and emotional & physiological state. This research aims to evaluate whether these four factors will affect the self-confidence of seven Universitas Pelita Harapan music therapy students when facilitating clinical improvisation. This phenomenological research was done by evaluating the students’ testimonials in a structured questionnaire. Seven respondents who were the third- and fourth-year students were asked to fill in this questionnaire. The data showed that the four factors in Bandura’s theory played a role in affecting the respondents’ self-confidence when facilitating clinical improvisation.

Abstract

Stroke is a medical condition that develops rapidly due to a sudden loss of brain function that lasts for more than 24 hours or more and can cause death. Stroke can cause a decrease in several human functional area depends on the brain damage. One of the area is cognition. Cognitive impairment in patients with stroke can lead to short-term memory loss. In this study, music therapy will be given to stroke patients aged 55-70 years old, who have short-term memory loss. Imitation activities of melodic, rhythms, or combination of the two musical elements was used in sessions. Patients were asked to imitate the music pattern that played by the researcher. This study was conducted by observing the patient’s progress form session to session and comparing the initial and final of Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Digit Span Assessment. The results showed an improvement in short-term memory of the patients through the implementation of ten sessions of music therapy. At the end of session, the patients were able to play longer and more complex musical patterns.

Abstract

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among first responders is an understudied issue in Indonesia. Until the point that this study was written, there has not been any literature regarding this issue that is available in Indonesia. In the American continent, music therapy is used as one of the non-pharmaceutical interventions for first responders and veterans with PTSD. Despite of the many literatures that were written on music therapy and PTSD, there is a lack of information on approaches and considerations when working with first responders with PTSD in a music therapy session. This study aims to offer the clinical idea and considerations; mainly the adaptation of Iso principle concept; to base music therapy session planning for first responders with PTSD. The Iso-principle is the idea of matching the chosen music to the client’s mood, and gradually changing the music to the desired mood. In this case-study, the flow of music therapy sessions with an adult male first responder will be reviewed and analyzed.
